Free Friday, suggestions?
Hey all, I have a kitchen pass from the wife and no classes this Friday. I'm thinking about running down to Fishlake and playing with my new camera some more before the ice goes away. I'm also tempted to run up to Willard and check out the wiper/walleye action. I don't have my boat up and running (clogged the water intake during the duck hunt) so I'll be bank tangling with zero experience at willard.

Anybody interested in joining me at either place, and/or tips? I recently made a bunch of elk and bison spicy pastrami and would be more than happy to share...

Can't find a partner for a fishlake run tomorrow, so Willard it is.

I've seen casting a mussel without weights and letting is slackline on the bottom works. Any types of spinners, cranks, etc that work from the dike? I've never done this before and would appreciate any tips.

Thanks.

It's Walleye spawn season except for the storm and cold. So you might do ok with casting tubes or curly tail jigs just off the bottom. Tip it with a piece of crawler. Good luck J

Thanks! Any particular sizes/colors that people prefer?

I like 3" curly tails in a white with pepper flakes, but Willard colors are white and blue or black. Take plenty of crawfish colors as well. Hopefully some will be coming in for you, but make sure you keep the bait on the other pole for cats or wiper. I expect your bait will catch more than the jig pole. Good luck J

oh ps I use 3/16 oz jig heads if you can find them. If not 1/8 or 1/4 will work.

Thanks that is really helpful. Where you located? I have some bison pastrami I made that if you're interested I'd like to thank you with for the tips. I'm in Orem and go to school at the U.

Hey that's really nice of you, but you better try the advice and see if it was any good first. I'm from Cache Valley anyway. Good luck at the Bay, I'm a little afraid the day you picked has a lot of strikes against it. Fish at Willard don't get very active when a storm or cold front move through, plus you have a full moon and colder water temps. Not a day I'd expect high numbers, but sometimes I fish when I can and hope for the best. Don't give up on the bay if it's not a banner day. Later J

This time of year...casting from shore...it is hard to beat plain old 3" white or pearl twisters on 1/8 oz. heads. 3" shad "swim baits" in the same colors work well too. As an alternate take some chartreuse in the same sizes. That works well when the water is cold an/or stained.

I was afraid it wouldn't be very good as cold as it is lately. Sorry but glad you had a day out. Later J
