April Fool at Yuba and Willard
Yes, I was the fool. Foolish for thinking it was warm enough to catch anything this past weekend.
Took the day off work Friday and went to Yuba to fish for Pike. It was possibly the coldest fishing trip I've ever been on, since I don't ice fish. I've been to Strawberry in November and it was warmer than Yuba was Friday. We tried casting spoons, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and lipless cranks. Nothing worked so we tried trolling the same lures to cover more water. Still nothing. I don't know if I missed the pre spawn or if it was just too cold. Many other boats and bank anglers were trying their luck but I never witnessed one fish being caught.
On Saturday, we decided to try Willard. By this time last year, we had already had two successful trips to Willard plus 2 or 3 to Jordanelle. This year is much different, at least for me. We trolled for hours on the open water, using our favorite Wiper lures that worked last year. Nothing. The water temp was about 45 when we launched and got up to 52 before we left. Now I know not to bother with Willard until the water temp is 60 or higher. The banks were lined with shore fishermen. While I was leaving, I noticed many of them were carrying out stringers full of Wipers. Apparently most of the Wipers were holding up in the shallows because the open water was too cold. I plan on giving it another couple of weeks before I return so it can warm up a bit. It's hard to stay home when you have spring fever but the lakes are taking a lot longer this year to heat up. I'll have to try and be a little more patient

Crazy... because we did awesome at willard today! We fished from 8 tell about 12 and landed over 20 wipers and 1 eye. Nothing to big... mostly 1.5 to 2 pounds with one close to 3. Fast action but we had to leave to be back for a bbq.[/reply][/reply]

Awesome! Glad you had a good day. Maybe the extra day of high pressure and warm temps between Saturday and Sunday helped? Either that or you have a lot better lure selection than me!

Went our Friday too and got skunked. Talked to 2 other boaters, 1 wiper and theeven other got skunked.. also had some friends who went out Saturday think they only got 2 fish all day. 1 wiper and a crappie. So you weren't the only one with bad fishing day. Yeah give it a couple of more days for the water to warm up.

We hit Yuba Sat. Wind was blowing until noon. Then died off. Sunny, Water temp 46 we used everything we had. Not even a nibble. And I have to say we fished the boat all over the lake. All we saw were carp. We fished 5-20 feet and we too tried trolling. Still on my bucket list...... Fish On
