That truly is tragic. I'ts unfortunate that he was under for 4 1/2 hours. There is nothing that can be done after that length of time.

I heard of an incident somewhere in the mid-west years ago about a lady driving off a bridge over a river in her VW bug. It sank to the bottom of this semi-shallow river.

River Rescue got out there and sent a diver in. I remember what the diver said because it was so funny.Sly

" I went into water expecting this to be a recovery rather than a rescue after an hour. I got down to the bug in this murky water and see a women staring through the window and waving at me. I started to laugh and almost had to surface do to swallowig water " She was saved without injuries.Wink

Some of them are lucky if you can get to them in time. There are some people who have been trapped under ice, without a vehicle for just over 1/2 hour and still survived thanks to a little proces in the body called " Mamillian Diving Reflex"

Cold water hits the back of your throat and starts a standby process in the body. The brain slows down its need for oxygen but just enough to keep it going.

After CPR and a dfib are used the person can come back to life. But not in all of the cases.

Good ole hypothermia can help too. My friends Mom was an ER nurse for a MASH unit in Korea and I remember her stories about soldiers coming in injuried with hypothermia and in some cases it saved a limb or life. Crazy

Hypothermia is a little bit differrent condition. That is a result for the bodies core temperature dropping too low. That can also cause poor circulation throughout the body. It can be helpful in the case of an amputation or an avulsion type of injury.

I dont know how I could live with hearing the last words "Dan, help me" from my friend of 15 years. It's something you would think of everyday for the rest of your life. And then he says "I don't know how he didn't get out," Phillips said. "It's terrible. I don't know how to deal with it." That just makes it even sadderFrown.

I read a recent story of two climbers here in California where one fell off the cliff and the other grabbed his arm but couldn't hold on. The survivor said he looked right into his frineds eyes as he fell screaming to his deathUnsure

Now that will definetley stick in your head.

Wow. Such a tragedy.

I've always wondered why anybody would want to drive out on ice when there's a river flowing underneath it. I wouldn't trust the ice no matter what. You never know when it could suddenly break away or be really thin in a spot.

ShockedAlthough it is being done all the time, cannot believe that people will still put their cars and or life in jeopardy by driving onto the ice. What for?? Years ago when I lived in the NE our lakes would freeze over pretty damn quick in tempertures that went below 0 for many nights in a row. We would build a fire in a 50 gal drum [raised off of the ice] and fish through the ice near the drum. Never but never did I ever see anyone drive onto the ice.

i,ll agree with ya bud. its really terrible, its like we was talkin with this stinkin river, connecticut, also theres so many currents too that it sweeps em right down thriu just as summer as winter, and fer ya can ever git hold of em too. even though there in the backwash fishin, winter wise, but the currents in there are still strong enough to move em. even with ie. thats the prblem with ice too though, thats what makes me nervous there just isn,t anyways to tell where its the worst. and thin. but the last thing i,d do is take a truck on the ice in the first plavce. this was a tragic accident,. i feel fer em. laterFrown

This would have never happened if they used theirs heads and thought "maybe off roading by the river isnt such a good idea." I would never drive onto the river. As you can see it is too dangerous.

Re: [patches] River accident kills one In reply to
Hey Patches, there are some shooting cases where they hit and sever an artery. At that point the artery retracts and closes off most of the blood flow. That's how that works. It is much different when it hits a vein. The vein is the lower pressure side of the blood blow in the body.

UnimpressedWater has always been a dangerous thing to be around, you must respect it. Around here where I live people die quite often in the water. Mostly weather is the main cause, but inexperience is also up there in ranking. Being an ex-navy man, I respect the water, whether it be a pond, lake, river, or ocean. Always be prepared for the unexpected never think you are safe to do anything!
