Engineered For Ice Fishing, This Reel Is ...

Jackson, Wis. – There was the dowel with the spike on one end wrapped in a heavy braided line. About that same time pterodactyls patrolled the skies and brontosaurs grazed on ferns the size of bed sheets. Sometime after, someone taped a small spinning reel on the broken tip of a long rod and modern day ice fishing was born.
As part of the ongoing evolution, new from Frabill® for the 2010-2011 ice fishing season comes the Bro Series Reel, which you could say ‘rose from the primordial ooze.’ Brian “Bro” Brosdahl, a progressive scientist when it comes to product development, grew tired of taking his summer reels, even the elite ones, and strapping them to this new class of ice fishing rods that captured the action and feel of a long rod. So after sharing his frustration with the engineering team at Frabill, they arrived at a solution, and it goes like this: Every feature of the Bro Series Reel considers the unique demands of ice fishing. For one, ice anglers tend to use smaller diameter line, which constricts and coils around the reel arbor. Frabill’s solution was incorporating a spool with a wider arbor. Bam!
Another issue is trying to fish multiple line-weights and diameters with the same size spool. Thick 10-lb. test line, for example, doesn’t perform very well on the typical ice fishing sized reel. With that in mind, the Bro Series Reel comes packaged with two spools, one for finesse fishing line weights of 1- to 5-lb. and the other for meatier 6- to 12-lb. test. Bam!
“Seems simple enough, but this is a major advancement in ice fishing reels,” says Bro. “Rarely do you want the same line on your backup spool. Now I can fish light 4-pound test for walleyes during the day when fish are warier, and quickly upsize to 6- or 8-lb. test for harder hits and bigger fish at dusk.”
Line loops and over-winding are common problems with the average ice fishing reel, but not the Bro Series Reel. A special low-profile spool cap steers clear of incoming and outgoing line, leaving it to spool cleanly and release effortlessly. Bam!
