A Record Catch
by: Eric Elshere
August 18, 2001 was the night of the second Trolling Motor Doctor Tournament at Lake Casitas. Let me remind you, this circuit of tournaments are after dark, Night Toruneys!!! The most fun type of tournament that there is. My dad, Larry and I drew a terrible number and got out on the water really late. We were in the second of the two flights, so we were already a little bummed. Not knowing where to fish, we headed to a spot we fished 2 weeks earlier in an American Bass night tourney, and we did well there. That was our first spot of the night.
No one there, so we fished it hard and we pulled out one fish, and left to try another spot. Fishing the other spot, we blanked and headed back to our first spot. Well, now there were two other boats there. Bad news for us. The good news, one of them left really soon, and we got our area back, that got us our one fish already.

We put in our time and ended up pulling out 4 bass on drop-shotted worms, one that was around 7.5 pounds. It was looking good for us. We continued down the shore, and fished for about two more hours, no bites or fish. We needed that one more bite, to fill out or limit.
We had about 45 minutes left so we ended up at the spot where I nailed me monster, 15.25 pounder earlier this year. The best choice we made all night. My dad Larry hit three bass in short order, one drop-shot fish and two crankbait fish. These three fish were all over five pounds. Larry got a huge 8.81 big fish of the tourney, and another around 8.5 pounds, with the smaller one at 5.5 pounds or so.

We headed into the scales with the first flight, knowing we couldn't risk killing our big sack of fish. So we headed to the scales with FOUR bags of fish. It was amazing, we put the fish onto the scales, and we watched in anticipation, 30.61 pounds for 5 bass. We had a huge limit, not expecting it to happen.
After the tourney was over, we were awarded a nice little sum, $2295, $600 Trolling Motor; compliments of the Trolling Motor Doctor, and a New Phenix Rod for Big Bass. This limit of fish, was the only limit weighed in, and is a New Record for this circuit. It was one night that I will never forget.
Lake Casitas
We used a combination of dark colored baits, Norman Crankbaits and dark colored worms on the drop shot. We used Owner hooks, the sharpest and strongest in the world, even on our crankbaits. We hooked them, and they never got off. We had our rods loaded with Maxima line which never let us down as we hooked the huge bass in the tourney. We say thanks to Bigfishtackle.com, Owner Hooks, and Maxima Line; plus all our other sponsors. First and foremost, we thanks our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for blessing us with this win and the fish to win the tourney.
Well night tourneys are fun, but can be tough too. Second place had three bass for only 11.83 pounds. I mean, you're either on them or not. So get involved with any night tourneys in your areas, and you will have a lot of fun, and catch some fish. Good luck fishing and God Bless!
