One Summer Morning

by: Michelle Elshere
One early morning my brother awakens me by telling me to “Get dressed because we’re going to Lake Casitas!” So we do, and when we get to the lake we realize nobody’s there, because it’s a Tuesday.

My brother and I both pitch-out some crawdads in a spot where a friend of ours caught a 10 pounder, just a week ago. We leave them there for about an hour. Nothing happens, no bite, no nothing. I’m thinking to myself, ‘what a great day this is.’ The weather was perfect, overcast ‘til about 11:30am. Just the way we like it!

I reel in my crawdad and head for the bait and tackle shop.
I like to talk to all the people that work there. I’ve known them all since I was a little girl. While I’m visiting, my brother stays down on the docks and continues to try and get one of those double digits’ that are roaming in an out of the Marina. Most of the people in the bait shop have left so I go back down to the docks to see what my brother is up to. As I walk down to the dock I see a couple of nice bass. I pitch a crawdad to them. They get spooked and move up very shallow. I follow and pitch again. This time it seemed like the smallest one had eaten my crawdad. They swim off and it looks as if my line goes with them. So… I set the hook and “wow” I have never seen a fish take off so fast. My reel was screaming, and screaming for a long, long time, too! This fish ends up taking me under three other docks before I can stop him and bring him back but, then he buries himself down in the grass. It took about 5 minutes to get him out. I finally do, and then I see that this fish was a lot bigger than the one I thought I had. I landed him on 8lb. test, and a Stradic 1000 that Bigfish supplied me with. This fish weighed 6.75lbs. That is my second biggest fish. (bass that is)

This was my first fish that I have caught on that combo and my first time out this summer. My brother got one bite and that was all. “I guess you could say...

‘HE GOT WORKED BY A GIRL!”
