How do you Nymph?
I usually nymph with the indicator above the flies on the same line I mean the flies and the indicator are both on the same line. I went to a club meeting and they were talking about different ways to tie your nymph on the line so they wouldnt get all tangled and they were also talking about bottom bouncing with nymphs.

I would be really interested in knowing how you nympy and if you possibbly can please post pics of your knots and setups. thanks

I nymph pretty much the same as you.
Sometimes, no indicator and high stick, and other times nymph, nymph and then split shot. Split shot on the end of the line.
But most times Indicator and nymph and dropper.

Yeah awesome. I am glad that I wasnt alone onthis one. I knew I wasnt but I am even more glad. I am going to have to try the split shot after the two nymphs. how exactly do you do that? Do you have the nymphs tied on with surgical knots or just tie another piece of tipit onto the bottom nymph and then put your split shot on that?

You take your leader and attach a tag (tippet) at maybe 12" to 20" up from bottom. Use a triple Surgeon's Knot OR the Ganakatsu Dropper Beads.
Tie a knot in the end and put split shot on there. Then attach your fly to the end of your leader. You could also attach a dropper off the bend or add another tag off the main leader.

Look up Provo River Bounce by Larry Tullis.

There are many ways to rig your nymphs, such as (going from the rod to the end of the tippet):
1)single Nymph
2)splitshot/nymph
3)splitshot/nymph/nymph
4)nymph/splitshot/nymph
5)nymph/nymph/splitshot

The nymphs can be attached inline (eye to bend to eye), with tags hanging out to the side or both (one fly on a tag, a second on the end to the eye).

I generally fish #3 the most and tie it inline since it's the fastest way for me to re-tie after a snag and I lose one or both nymphs. I use an indicator unless I'm fishing deep or very fast water.

When I fish with tags, I tie a surgeons knot and leave some extra hanging out for the fly. If I'm lucky enough to keep the rig after I've changed flies a few times and there is no more tag, I attach a new piece with a perfection loop.

If you can find it, Kelly Galloup does a great job explaining various rigs on his Nymphing by the Numbers DVD.
There's also a good article here by Loren Williams:

Great link there JimT.
You know, I generally (specially on stillwater) HATE to attach a fly to the bend cause it HAS to effect the way that fly floats, but IT CATCHES FISH!
I am one of those that has to tie off at the eye.......MOST times

If I am fishing a river and it is close quarters OR windy...I absolutely do the #3 with the dropper off the bend. I guess that is why I prefer to squish the barbs instead of barbless hooks. The squished barb forms a little bump the keeps that dropper from sliding off.

But TAGS are my favorite. I think because I am so use to fishing furled leaders no.

Re: [flygoddess] How do you Nymph? In reply to
I should clarify: when fishing rivers, I use #3 off the bend(although I prefer the tag method but just need to work on my knot tying skills while watching TV).

I really liked Kelly's method of using a heavier tippet (2x) for the main line with 2 bloodknots where the tags would go (one for each). He then uses a tag with lighter tippet and ties a perfection loop in the end and wraps it around the 2X (above the knot) and pulls it back thru the loop. It can rotate around the line to reduce tangles and the double line sticking out the side helps to keep it from "wilting". If one of them gets snagged, the theory is you loose only that fly. These are easy to exchange as you use up the tag.

For those having trouble picturing this:
Flyline----2X---BN-2X--BN-5X or 6X--Splitshot
attach 4,5,or 6X tags above each BloodKnot (BN)

For lakes, I've been using streamers with a nymph off the back of my streamer bend (figure it doesn't impact the streamer as much). I haven't fished many nymphs alone in stillwater due to lack of faith (how in the world can they find those little things?) but I was converted on a recent trip and will be using them a lot more in the future.

Kelly is my hero too.
Although, I have been using GAMAKATSU Dropper Beads
http://www.gamakatsu.com/.../new_dropperbead.htm
for my stillwater, and have used them on rivers except, as you mentioned, if you get snagged you change loosing the whole thing.
I have tried them once so far on a river and I like the out come. Haven't lost one, but have lost the bottom fly. The knot kept the bead on
They work great also for attaching weight to the side hole and using the regular line for main fly with dropper off that fly be it the eye or the bend.

It's hard to tell from the photo how large/small they are. Some of the guys I fish with don't even like the knot/perfection loop set-up described above for rivers because they think it has too much drag and slows down the descent of the line.

What size do you use?

Once you put one on the main line, do you push the dropper thru the hole and then tie knot?

I may have to try some for my stillwater nymphing. Now that I have a pontoon I have lots more room to carry more stuffSmile

You can pretty much put the dropper tippet on anytime, but be sure you put it on before putting the usual tippet on your leader.
I just checked. Small is the size of BB split shot and I was able to get 6 lb P-Line fluorocarbon through it, so I will say small.
I use medium on stillwater for 8lb and heavier. Little surprised the small will support 6lb. I think I will stick with small...LOL

You bet. I have little ones about the size of a pencil eraser I use on shallow gin clear creeks. I am not crazy about the tooth pick, but it is easy to move and set.

still trying to figure this out. Went out today on the South FOrk of the Snake and well I caught 3 whitefish. Which was nice to have a bent rod anyways.

Question, Where would I be swimming if I were a trout.? i had this problem last year as well. I caught a ton of whitefish and no trout. Am I missing something here?

I have no idea. Maybe the White are more aggressive right now.

Yeah I have no idea either. Ill post on some other state forum to see if some of those fisherman know what or how to fish for some.

Re: [flygoddess] How do you Nymph? In reply to
since those beads look to be very small can you put one of your furled leaders thru it??

No it is for knottless straight mono or fluoro so it can slide.

Re: [macfly55] How do you Nymph? In reply to
I use it with a furled leader, I just put it on the tippet I attach.
So if the leader is 5' I attach 3' of mono and slide the bead on that. Works awesomely!

Re: [flygoddess] How do you Nymph? In reply to
how do you keep the bead from slipping up and down that piece of tippet? I understood it (the bead) is suppose the keep the drop line from tangling by rotating around the leader or in this case a tippet line..??
