I haven't come across deals like that, but while working for Orvis, I got a killer discount that did allow me to get the reel for less than a spool to a non employee.

Takes up a little more room but I like the idea of the whole reel. Line doesn't fall off either.

I maybe have 1/4 the spools to my reels ratio. Maybe even 1/8th.

I have a rocky mountain turbine large arbor reel from orvis.. when I first got the reel I ordered in an extra spool for my sinking line.. at that time the spools were like 30.00 each and the reel I think was in the area of 50 - 60.00...

not long ago I noted a sale on the spools for that reel.. 30.00 spools going for 10.00.. so I ordered in 6 of them and now have my dt, and rio grand lines spooled up, ... so that gives me four different lines I can use on all of my rods (all my rods are 5/6 or 6 wt)... easy switch out from spool to spool...

oh you mean when I tangled it all up and could not get the knot out to save my life and had to switch over to spinning with bubble fly and plastics???

it was a wonderline gen 3 wf - 6 - f .... luckily when I got everything all tangled up I did not damage the line itself but the mono leader was of no use when I got done..LOL...

Re: [macfly55] 3wt line In reply to
Okay but I think my suit cost less than what S&A is getting for a spool these days. OMG $100 bucks.
Scientific Anglers Sharkskin Fly Fishing Line
Ultimate Trout Taper
Specifications
• Fly Line Density: Floating
• Fly Line Taper: Long belly, weight forward with welded front loop
• Total Head Length: 51 feet (for 5 weight line - varies by line weight)
• Running Line Length: 49 feet (for 5 weight line- varies by line weight)
• Total Line Length: 100 feet
• Core: Braided multifilament for cold water use
• Coating: Sharkskin Micro-textured surface on 3M PVC
• Line Weights: 3 through 8 weight
• Colors: Blue Heron (gray) or Chartreuse
PROS- Technological breakthrough greatly improves overall fly line and fly fishing performance; less friction, greater casting distance, higher floatation, easier mending, better presentation, more stealth, less line memory, improved potential durability, with less effort from the caster.
CONS- $100 price is about $40 more than other premium fly lines. Creates much more noise going through fly rod guides than smooth fly lines.
BOTTOM LINE – One of our basic fly fishing tools has experienced significant improvement! If the durability claims hold up, there’s no reason not to buy this line if you dry fly or nymph fish in moving water. The Sharkskin should be economical to use in the long run.

oh Im sure that your suit cost way less than that fly line.. it was the cost that stopped me from getting one for either my sage or my mojo rod.. :-)...

That is a big plus however. So far SS out lasts regular fly line.
There is a noise, but I like itSly

We just didn't know back then. The Windcutter is my next choice.

I would of gotten the windcutter instead of the grand but the fly shop was out of stock on them at the time.. :-)

But the Grand is good. Like the GPX a heavier front. Easy to load up.

If I can get the reel with the spool for a good price then
I will do that.
Now what if someone has one reel with five spools and
the reel brakes. Then what? Fishing is over.
If I have extra reels and spools- no problem if something
brakes. I can keep on fishing and take care of it laterSmile
Thats just the way I look at it.

I was looking at the shark skin line. Im not too sure about it.
Also the feedback about those on Cabelas is not
the best.
If I can get some realy good deal on it then I may try it.
But thank you anyways sir Smile

Never heard anyone saying that they had a reel that broke. Don't think that a good reel is going to break unless you drop it off of a bridge. lol

Okay Peter, I just had to read the reviews...on the TROUT it seems that it actually got great reviews. A couple of two stars and I will be honest, from using the line, I am betting neither of them have used Sharksin. In fact the one says that SA was surprised and a "BAD BATCH?"

It is noise, but like I said, doesn't bother me. No wear on my fingers. Any WET line can be a little ruff on hands. Collects dirt or ice? You know I fish in 15 degrees....it doesn't ice anymore than any other line and as far as the dirt, I fish mossy waters...again no more than any other line.

It is your choice. Lance Egan is on the USA FFteam and also the manager of our local Cabela's. He uses SS and loves it. He said he was buying new line every year (the guy sleeps ff) but he was into like his third year now with SS.

All I know, if you get a chance to try it, you would be looking for a way to come up with the extra cash.Wink

it?

Re: [peter805] 3wt line In reply to
You bet, but it would be the GPX. I don't know if I said this, but I don't really use a three weight. I had a couple, one I gave to the hubby and the other I never really use. I use my 2 weight or a four weight and YES I have it for the four (it was the first SS I bought) and the five weight.
