Well according to the DNR here in Michigan, we have no cougars. Try telling that one to my husband.

Re: [Guest] what kind of fish is it ? In reply to
we do , i have had two different encounters with them . one in 1999 , one in 2002 . a coworker of mine saw one on his farm earlier this year . there have been other reports from various people in our area , the d.n.r. does not write them down , even after several livestock kills have been reported .

we also have black wolves in the lower penusala , several sightings and a few videos , but still listed as unconfirmed by our d.n.r. . ( ice crossings from the u.p. is suspected .

in the d.n.r. listed cougarss as an protected animal in the hunting guide back in 2001 . in 2002 it was listed as an endangered species here in michigan .

our local d.n.r. " unofficially " states that they are probbably someones pets that just got too big , so they turned them loose . it's a sad thing that people try to raise thes bueatiful wild creatures as pets , but to turn a semi domestacated one back into the wilds is just plain crule . the animal is left to fend for itself without the proper natural knowledge that it aquires from it's parent. thats where these animal rescue groups come into play . they have the skills needed to diagnose which of these animals will be capable of reintroduction into the wilds , and which ones will end up being cared for during there life span .

why does the d.n.r. not confirm the presence of these animals ? man's fear . poachers would go looking for them , people would stop camping , hikeing , ect,ect . the economy here in the north thrives on tourists .

these animals will retreat from any encounters with man , unless hungry .but let loose as a pet , you can bet one of these days an unfortunate incident may happen , all because of someones stupidity in the treatment of a wild creature as a pet .

where you from (general area ) ? is your hubby a sportsman ? there are several other fourms that can be viewed with our free membership , including the product testers board . you just missed out on our free two years paid subscription of feild and stream magasine . we sent out over 3000 paid sucriptions in a little over a months time .

yes , my spelling sucks , but i can sure fish and hunt and always welcome otheres to go with me if they would like . if your hubby ever needs a partner he's always welcome here !

the DNR has changed their tune on this old song

we have had a black panther in wixom for more that 15 years. It died a couple years ago on the express way, hit by a car. (did not make the news)

black panthers are cougars.

on the fred trost show a couple weeks back he reported that the dnr had changed their toon about cougars being michigan, and that they are harmless to human population because of their need to live in privecy. they do not like to make contact with humans, nor do they even like to be seen by humans. most people who see them do so by pure axident and usualy only brief glimpses so those who see them quite often mistake them for a dog or small deer. they are usualy gone at a bat of an eye.

no one has been killed by a cougar in nearly 300 years since the early days of the french fur trappers.

the fact of the matter is you are 100 times more likely to be attacked by a deer before you will be attacked by a cougar.Wink

LH,

It might be a Blue Pike. A speices of Pike known only to the Great Lakes, and thought extinct in the '70s. They had large Walleye like eyes and pike like bodies. The picture I found appears to be a Walleye/Blue Pike Hybrid, the ones I remember from my youth were more silvery and had bigger teeth, but you'll get the idea. If it was a Blue Pike and you can catch it, it's worth 500 bucks. See the following link. http://www.nativefish.org/BluePike/ If it is a Blue Pike it would be nice to see some still exist.

i thought by the name and the history that our little mystery would be solved , but that's not the fish . it was very informative thou , i had only heard of rumors of this fish before . the slim chance that the blue pike is still out there , well wouldn't you like to be the guy that lands one ? i would , but then comes the question , what do you do with it ? collect the $500.00 and fame or put it back for repopulation of the species ?

Hey man that black fish you got there is called a Burbot. I fished for those in real cold waters in North Canada (ice fishing once) - http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=169

It's that thing - don't worry they're harmless and native. But nobody eats em.

on the 300 year thing , a young child was snatched and devoured by a cougar out west a couple years ago while she and her family were hiking a trail when she disapeared . d.n.a. tests were used to identify the childs remains in the fecies ( scat ) left by a cougar . the cougar was hunted down and killed and further tests done to positivley identify it as the culprit , a old large female that was suffering from malnurishment .\

the story was on nightline . they first thought the parents had done something to the child . that was the only reason it made the news .

animal attacks very rareley make it to the news . here in michigan a young boy was killed by coyotes after wandering away from his campsite in alcona county . (1998 or 1999 i think ) the story never even made it to the news papers . why ? , i don't know . they do happen , they are just kept hush , hush for some reason .

that 300 year thing was for michigan, out west I hear about one just about every year.

I saw on the news this morning there was a report of a cougar grabing some ladies kitty kat right in her yard, she screamed and the cougar droped the kitty and ran off. If I herd it right it was some where here in michigan, (I was half asleap listening to the news)

a burbot is a bowfin or otherwise known as a dogfish .

i saw my second cougar dining on the side of the road three years ago . big enough to pick the yearling deer up and trott off into the night with it .
