Why is corn illegal??
#1
I just read on one of the other threads that it is illegal to use corn as bait in missouri. Did I read that correctly? why??

I read somewhere once that fish cannot properly digest corn. That could be the reason or perhaps they don't allow bait at all?

There are studies to the contrary.

If overused, corn can cross the line from chum to litter which is most likely why it is illegal in some places. And perhaps because it works so well. The gov't figured it would be more effective to just say it kills the fish. Flouride is good for you too.

Fish process corn about as well as we do.[Wink]

A report by some one else:

fishermen emptying their can of corn over the side into the lake at the end of the days fishing.
Caught fish that were just stuffed full of corn almost to the point of bursting. Even seen fish, mainly kokes and some rainbows floating on the lake surface, alive, but unable to submerge, because corn had fermented and produced too much gas in their stomachs. Left to die and pickings for the ospreys.

It is illegal here in Utah, but I witness this in Idaho;.

We can use corn for bait here in Washington, but most places it is not permitted to use corn for chum. There are places where we are allowed to chum with corn or whatever we want. I do not use corn for the same reason I do not use power bait, it is not natural and it seems too easy. There is a local forum here in Washington where they were talking about one of the fellows had designed a "fly" that looked like the purina fish chow (or whatever it is called) that the stocked fish are fed while still in the pens. The place they fish is a reservoir on an indian reservation where the indians raise the fish (paid for by the state) and release them for the tourists to fish with a special reservation license. I say go to Kroger and buy a farm raised fish and save a little money...that is not fishing!

Opps, was I ranting again, sorry.

VERY interesting. I had no idea that
1. it is illegal in some places and
2. that it is bad for the fish.

The only time I have ever used corn was at a stocked rainbow trout pond in North Carolina and the owner instructed us to use the corn. I thought it was amazing that we were getting bites the minute we casted. I thought it was just that he had the pond stocked so full. Now I know they just loved the corn.

Ater stocking in the spring we have good luck useing powerbait, as it looks close to what they use at the hatchery. Doesn't affect them like corn.

Well like everyone else said it can be a pain if overused and many times is as a chum, its cheap and easy too. I fish lakemead its legal and I have tried it as a bait and chum it does bring in the carp and blugil at times but Ive personally view it as a weak bait[Wink]just my 2 cents

Corn is generally illegal in states that believe their fishermen cannot be trusted to not chum with it. Pretty simple reason.

Powerbait makes a "Hatchery" pellet to fish with. Cabelas carries it.

One day, years ago, in Guatemala I saw to kids fishing with the maize stuff tortillas are made with, they had a big bowl of the stuff, they didn't even have a fishing rod, just plain line, hooks and they were making very small balls of the stuff, they would then swing the hook overhead and cast it on the water, amazingly the fish seemed to be biting instantly, if the fish didn't bite, the kids would pull the line, get rid of the maize bait and get a new one and they'd repeat the task over and over, in a matter of minutes they have a big basket of fish and went home.

To me that was amazing, a think of beauty, I guess fish loves corn, is that what everyone is talking about? or plain corn kernels?

ya, the talk is about corn cernals that are baught by the can.

what the kids were using is concidered doghball. "that is leagle"

the differance is, ground corn is much like sand in a fishes belly, a fish can pass it, a cernal of corn will lodge in thier belly, trout and other gamefish cant digest the hull of the corn.
