Google missed it!?
Hi!
I have a Norwegian website (fiskeri.no) and this summer I "tried" to translate some articles into English. Google found them all, exept one. One of them (porbeagle shark) has even a hight rank with google, but the one about the Greenland shark is not even found!!
Anyone who knows why? Are there words I`ve used in the article that are "banned" by some search engines?

Sometimes there is no ryhme or reason to why something happens, as far as search engines go.

I suggest you use a sitemaps.xml file that google and other search engines can use to 'find' all the pages on your site.

I have one set up for my website, www.utahfishinginfo.com, and I now have over 150 pages indexed by google.

Here is a link to the official google sitemaps page:

Click Here to find out more.

A sitemaps xml file looks like this:

<urlset>
<url>
<loc>http://www.utahfishinginfo.com </loc>
<lastmod>2006-12-01</lastmod>
<changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
<priority>1.0</priority>
</url>
<url>
<loc>http://www.utahfishinginfo.com/...gmap.php</loc>
<lastmod>2006-12-01</lastmod>
<changefreq>monthly</changefreq>
<priority>0.9</priority>
</url>
</urlset>

This is just an example. You can add all your pages to the xml file using more <url> tags. Read more about it at the link above.

Then, you place this xml file on your site, and submit its url to google. Google's 'spiders' will then crawl your site and even give you feedback about invalid urls it finds, so you can correct them.

Good luck!

Kevin

Thank you Cat Man!
I`ll go to the Google-link and see what I can do about it.

one of the things that happen is search engines do a timed search, meaning they spend only a second or 10 and pick up the highest ranking sites.

this is why some non related sites come when you do searches. they pay to be ranked and reranked monthly and some cases weekly and the realy anoying sites pay daily.

the other way a search engine will pick up your site has to do with how many hits you receive per day on a particular topic. "visits"

If you never get any visits, or you dont pay to have your site ranked then you are at the bottom of the pile and you will need to set peramiters of your search to run longer searches. and to run world wide searches.

Thanks Dave!
I must admit I do not know much about "codes" and "setting peramiters". I use FrontPage and know how to copy and paste codes, and that`s it.
Anyhow, Google has now found the page about Greenland Shark. I just copied the URL to the page and pasted it in Google`s "add a website" (or something like that)-box. Still don`t understand why search engines behave as they do. I do not pay for ranking. Still the page about porbeagle shark was ranked as number 2 or 3 (from the end of october til yesterday). Today it had dropped to 19? Well, I don`t understand why, but I can`t complain - there are thousands of shark pages out there. I feel that a lot of my pages has a higher rank than they should have (or deserve)!!

changing peramiters of your search to get the results you are hoping for dose take some pratice.

what happens to move it down is say you ran a search on your own page and when you did you opened up a page below yours, you just moved your page down the list.

I almost forgot,

individual computers will draw up different searches. This is because search engines keep track of what you looked for the last time you did a search. This over time will set the pattern that a search engine will use to do your specific search.

this is why people come to bigfishtackle.com to ask fish questions. we have a base of moderators here who when not fishing will answer fishing questions, and many cases our moderators will do searches to find what you are looking for.

If you want your students to be able to find your work you should tell them to type in your last name in with the shark and your sites will be the only sites to come up on the list.

sorry about the spelling, and my typing isnt much better.

I ran an ensencive search to see what it would take to get you Greenland Shark to come up.

just typing in greenland shark comes up with
26,100 for Greenland shark. (0.10 seconds)

I found that you did not put in your name as auther. if you want some one to be able to pick your artical out from the thousands of others you may want to do that.
  • now the page that comes up is not your actual page, you have to open the site that dose come up and you will find your shark.

I was able to get google to bring up your site by typing in this.

Greenland shark fiskeri.no.
and
Large sharks in the north

Thanks again Dave. Think I understand what you mean. Yes, I have searched for my own pages and opened them (must admit I do this a couple of times every week). That is why I know the rank of a lot of my pages. Was not sure if it helped on the ranking, but from your answer I guess it does. The page about Greenland shark is ranked as 92 on my PC (guess you have the same rank when searching in google for "Greenland shark"). Have aslo heard that it helps making links to the actual page both from my own site and from others sites? I`ve done that as well. I`ll do some more work on this, and let you know when the page is among the top ten (if it ever happens). Well, you`ll never know, I`ve already placed two links to the page on this forum!!!Wink

You can also increase your page rank by having other pages link to yours. If you can get other people/websites to put up links to your site, the search engines see it as more 'important' because it was important enough for others to want to link to it.

Google, especially, puts a very high weight on pagerank. You can see what pagerank all your pages have by downloading the full google toolbar, and enabling it to show pagerank. Then, at the top of your browser, it will show you the pagerank of every website/page you visit.

Get the google toolbar for free from:

Thanks for the adivce Cat Man. Have just installed the toolbar, and it was almost depressing to see the lack of action in the rank-box while visting my own pages written in English. The Norwegian pages did a better score. Does "time since first published" influence the ranking? Noticed that some of my old pages had a "high" rank, thought some of the newest (and more visited) have a lower rank.

Give it time. Google adjusts their rankings approximately once every three months. And remember, search engines love content!! Keep good content and you will improve your rankings.
