July 9th weekly IDFG chinook salmon fishing report for Upper Salmon
The weekly chinook salmon report was released a little later today--5:04 pm. We've reproduced it verbatim and included a screen shot of the spreadsheet, too:

http://www.salmonriveridaho.net/p/fish.html

Last week there were 68 adults kept and this week the total is 206. Fishing success is definitely picking up on The Upper Salmon River between Ellis and the Sawtooth Hatchery above Stanley.

Yeah...go get'em!!!

Even the "bobber-boys" are able to catch a few......if you have to resort to a bobber to catch a Chinook. C'Mon Man....Learn how to "feel the bottom", and catch more fish!!

Good luck all....

I suppose you feel the same way about "plunkers"? How about the "spinners"? The "fly-fishers"? C'mon man. Just cause it's your way doesn't mean it's the only way.

LOL...Hooknhunter, don't get you waders all wadded up.

As I stated, "Even the "bobber-boys" are able to catch a few"...

I'm not telling you that you that "Just cause it's "my" way doesn't mean it's the only way", but simply that stating that even those who don't have the touch, dexterity, or concentration to "fish" other than sitting in a lawn chair, watching a bobber, or for that fact, listening for a bell, can catch fish...

Best of luck with that 2-4 fish weekend Hooknhunter... :)

Laffin.......... Under the right conditions floats and eggs will out fish the lowly one trick in the bag drift fisherman. I like to switch it up and use a multitude of tactics and catch nooks on every single one of em........ Water conditions, river systems, and time of year play a larger role on how I pic my tactics.

They came through hell and high water to get here! The least we can do is greet em!

I completely agree with using different tactics. I seen a lot of fish caught on roe and floats this year and I haven't done very well bouncing. I usually do pretty well for myself. I have seen fly fishermen do better than bouncing. I think it one of those years. I do the same thing with waterfowl hunting. People always tell me they do it one way and that's it. Well I always come out of the season with better numbers.

I watched some Canadian boys fly fishing them. With a egg pattern. They did really well. Kinda pissed me off, they let them all go. hehe. To each there own. No floats, no lead. it was pure magic! I am just glad they are making a return, up the river of no return. Thanks for the report SalmonRiverId.

Thanks Idaho! I appreciate your note. I am posting up something to the Chinook Salmon Fishing report pretty much every day. Today I made a couple of graphs of Hatchery return data. I wish I could dig up more information but there hasn't been a whole lot coming out of IDFG except the weekly stuff. I will be heading up there for a week beginning July 27th.

By the way, for all your guys and gals who are up fishing for chinooks on The Upper Salmon circle July 28th on your calendar. It's Clayton Heritage Day there in Clayton (Population 7). We're gonna be the judges for their Chili Cookoff. Ya'll come!

Well, I digressed. Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, back to the fish--if anyone feels like sending me something to put in the fish report, I'd sure be happy to do it. The direct email is:

salmonriverguide@gmail.com

and the fish report which is generally updated every day is located here:

It's 1600 chinooks. IDFG Staff has repeated this mantra to me numerous times. They always say "it's a moving target" but they keep coming back to the 1600 figure. This past Monday's harvest total was 278. We did a long discussion of how that number fits into the shaping of this season. You can scroll down through this link and find it:

http://www.salmonriveridaho.net/p/fish.html

We talked to one of the Boise IDFG fish biologists and he was saying "GO CATCH FISH!" It's a LONG way from a current harvest of 278 to the harvest target of 1600 and (at this time) you have IDFG guys rooting for your FISH ON success!!!!!

GOOD LUCK and post photos when you get back

wow! 1600! thats a huge number compared to the 3 open years up there isnt it? Unfortanatly last time we were up there we went fishing in redfish inlet and had spent a bit of time at the lodge... sipping bloody mary's and buckle shiners.... i dropped the camera in the water... this is the last pic's we got with the camera... i will have to borrow one for the next trip.

The last one wasnt from my camera but was the biggest of the trip caught by my cousin. he is in a wheelchair we suited him up and put him out there.

Sawtooth trap number dropped yesterday In reply to
One of the things we're doing in our fishing report for The Upper Salmon River (Sections 18 & 19) is daily updates of two graphs of the Sawtooth Hatchery Adult Trap numbers. Yesterday's trap number was 71, a drop from the 140's logged for the previous 3 days and the high of 188 on July 10.

We also enlisted a Dear Friend to keep an eye on Deadman Hole and Tunnel Rock, two of the hotter spots in Section 18. You can see the graphs and read our friend's first notes on the Deadman area here:

Happy Mid July! jp
