Best catfish bait on Des Plaines River
I caught a 5 lb. channel cat in the Des Plaines today on creek chub, but that's not the best bait to use. At home, after a failed attempt to clean and cook the fish, I decided to cut the stomach open and see what the fish's last meals had been. In his stomach were at least four crawdads, and one that had been swallowed whole! This explains my other catch- a smaller cat hit a line of mine baited with a dead crawdad. If you smother them in garlic, the crawdads are even more effective (I tried this and my line snapped 5 minutes later after a monster took it- hook, line, and sinker).
