I have had plenty of experience trying to decipher bad spelling.Every weekend I have to read inspection reports from three guys running a rock crusher. Sometimes I give up and just put a question mark next to the repair needed. But when they write" belt 2 has a holl in the shut rite abuv the tellpulley" I know what it means.
The thing that really drives me nuts is all the people on KSL trying to sale something.

As an employee at a local university I have no good news as far as the intelligence of the coming generations, I don't think it's a lack of edgamacation so much as lack of common sense. I don't know how many times I have heard "when i gradurate i am going to make 120k" then they get mad when I am forced to tell them not when you are wearing your sisters pants well below your butt crack, and yes I do know what you all disappear into that pine tree for my nose works perfectly well, I am not even that old but even I don't get what is going on in their heads, maybe I am old and don't realize it yet

But the bad from your side occurs more often on these threads than from my side.

uhoh sorry tubedude I might be one of those people. I talk with so much slang it might come out in my writings and manifestos.....

Don't pet the sweaty stuff...or however that goes. I was not picking on anybody in particular. I just have a bit of fun reading (or trying to read) some of the posts folks put up. More important to me that somebody went fishing and cared enough to make a report...with or without good spelling. You do good work.

A lot of reports are put up while the angler is still excited from the trip, after catching a lot of fish or a big fish, etc. Some posts are made when folks have just got in after a marathon 30 hour round trip to some far flung fishin' hole...and their funny words are excusable. Still others just like to have fun with the English language...and take great liberties with it. It's all good.

Like DuBob, I grew up in a time when we were graded on spelling and punctuation. And we had to submit papers and reports written on real old-time TYPEWRITERS. No deletes or do-overs...or spell checks...or fancy fonts. If you made enough mistakes that you couldn't hide with whiteout or correction paper you had to retype a whole page.

I was the kid that won all the spelling bees. I also developed an appreciation for using words to convey thoughts and ideas...and to be able to put them on a page for others to read. In my working career I was employed to do a lot of writing...both technical and fictional. I also ended up being a proofreader and copy editor for the writings of others.

So...whether it is a blessing or a curse I can look at a written page and almost immediately spot the more glaring errors. That is, on everybody else's stuff...but not my own. I still mess up too.

I dare you to find spelling, grammar, or syntax errors in my 18-year-old's posts here on BFT, (username MeGustaPescar,) or even in writing done by my 14-year-old.

Yes, there are a lot of issues with the tech generation and their command of the English language. But my grandfather had a hard time filling out his own checks, and he passed away almost 3 years ago, at age 96.

The simple matter of age I think is less relevant to the issue at hand than the love of books and reading. Show me a kid who loves to read, and I'll show you a kid who'll be able to write well, no matter his or her age.

Anyway, the whole subject is thoroughly off-topic for these boards. Let's go "fishun!" [sic]
