A Berry Fishy Story...
My cousin and I went to Strawberry today to see if the ice was thick enough to walk on yet. It was.
Catching was good early in the morning and then slowed down around 10:30 or so. So we packed everything into the sled and decided to head back. While we were packing the sled we each left a pole in the water and we each caught a couple of fish while getting ready to go. All packed up, we decided to fish "just a few more minutes".
The bite turned back on and for about another 1/2 hour we took turns catching fish. We really were just about to leave for the second time when my cousin said: "Dangit, I've snagged the bottom". I ignored him and kept fishing. A few seconds later he said "It's not a snag...its a fish". Still ignoring him he finally yelled "Oh my gosh, I've caught a whale!!" I ignored him since he says that about every fish he catches but when he started yelling for help I decided to go over and see what he was babbling about. I looked down the icehole and saw a big eye looking back up at me. I don't remember exactly what I said, but I think I can't type it here and we spent the next 10 minutes trying to get it on the hard deck. The fish had wrapped itself up in the fishing line and we could never get the head to come to the hole. We finally got the fish thru the hole, and my cousin started babbling incoherently and wandering aimlessly jumping up and down like a freaking idiot. Once he settled down we took some pictures of it. It was a Cutthroat that ended up being just over 27 inches long, 14 inch girth and 8 lbs! He did keep it and is going to have it mounted or have a replica made or whatever.
We ran into MGB coming off the ice and my cousin showed the fish to him. It takes a lot to impress Mike, but even he was impressed! Mike almost talked us into staying and fishing a little longer but I knew I'd really be in trouble if I missed the family photo shoot...again. (Missed it a few weeks ago the first time because I was fishing too long!) Anyway, we bid him good luck and we headed home. We ended up with 45 fish between us with 1 of those being a Rainbow.

So was the "big one" a cutt or a bow?
Sounds like a great time!

Congratulations on the big catch. You never know what you can pull out of the water the last few minutes of fishing. I caught a 26 inch fish this summer as I was organizing the boat. Itís a great way to end the day.

What a stupid question!

What a huge fish! I am glad I was able to see it out on the ice. You guys where pumped. I walked out and fished out of the same holes as you guys and got into some fish right from the start. Caught at least 20 maybe 30. I had one huge one half way out of the hole but the hook came out and it sliped back in, I was bumed out. Thanks for finding the fish today and pointing me in the right direction and I would also like to thank you for the jig heads you left out on the ice, I'm keeping them so don't ask me to give them back.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR CATCH!

Nice fish. Congrats to the angler who caught it. One of these days......it will be my turn.

I have found from many decades of experience that having your line in the water improves enormously your chances of catching a fish. On the other hand, as Iíve frequently learned from those same decades of experience, having your line in the water is no guarantee you will catch a fish...

Nice fish.. I plan on hitting the berry the first part of next week... any additional suggestions on location or technique would be greatly appreciated... AJ

Well done Randy (I guess it was actually your cousin). When they get that large they are definitely something special.

Wow, that is a very nice Trout. Man can't wait to get out on the berry as soon as there is good enough ice for this fat boy to get on to. Thanks for sharing.

MGB,
...I think my cousin left those jigheads there on purpose as a sacrifice to the ice fishing gods...or you...whoever got there first! Arron will be honored that you ended up with them!
Glad you got into the fish, I was bummed that I couldn't stay longer!

Lavaman,
Arron (cousin) finally decided enough was enough and sacrified his hands and stuck them down the hole (33 degree ice cold water) to grab the fish on one of its swim-bys. It fit thru the hole ok, but it just wasn't going to poke its head up to get the grippers on it! His hands were numb for 1/2 hour from the cold water but he didn't care!

I love reading stories like this. It's awesome because I can picture the fish going back and forth under the hole. I'm not looking for exact spots but am wondering what ice conditions are at Strawberry. How is the ice in Chicken Creek East, the Ladders, and the main marina? I have a friend who wants to get some new gear out after Christmas and want to hit Strawberry. Thanks for the info and if we go I'll post a report.
