Catfish fever at Benson
With the weather as nice as today's was, I just couldn't wait any longer to start trying to get on the catfish contest board. After work I ran down to Benson marina and started enjoying the beautiful day. Also I had a couple of lines out even though it still felt a little early in the season.
After 10 minutes or so, something was hitting the bait on one rod, but the downfall of circle hooks is I have to be patient enough for the fish to hook itself. It's hard to overcome decades of setting hooks. So I waited, and was disappointed when only a small piece of bait appeared to have been chewed loose.
I decided to downsize, and went with the smallest jighead in my bag, and was rewarded with a catfish! It was just a bullhead, but a catfish nonetheless, and it chased away the skunk. A few minutes later I was introduced to his twin brother.
Since the skunk was gone I decided to try the larger bait again, and got a few bumps on each rod, but they seemed to have a fear of commitment.
A couple of jetskis showed up to remind me why I like to fish more remote, and wakeless areas of the lake, so I called it a day about 7 PM.
I considered entering one or both of these fish in the contest just to get on the board, since they technically count as catfish. I don't want to jinx myself though, and if I enter them I can see them being the only ones I get for the year, so discretion is the better part of valor.
I already have the smallest fish trophy from last year's contest anyway. Every time I put it up on the mantel in the living room, I find it on back on the bookshelf in my bedroom the next day. One of us is gradually coming to an understanding about the proper place of pride for such a prestigious award...

You could enter them in the other contest under panfish. Thanks for sharing.

You knew you'd get Rod, Yote and my attention with that post didn't you... Lava may even perk up a bit... Nice job breaking the ice and Rod is correct those will work great for the panfish part of the other contest, but we don't start it for two weeks yet, but they would work... Good to know the fish will start biting, I was planning on trying it this weekend, but didn't have high hopes yet... I need to find some carp, I don't have any bait.... So since corn is legal now on cutler do you think we can catch carp with it? May have to try that Saturday after it warms up... Do have some nightcrawlers though, so I guess I'll start with them... Thanks for the report... J

I wanted to get a carp as well. My hope was that it might be a carp interfering with my bait, so I downsized hoping they would suck it up easier. There were a couple of them in the area in front of me that jumped while I was there. Shrimp was the only bait I had with me, some fresh and some cured in strawberry jello. The strawberry was the only thing that got hit.

Interesting, I wouldn't have ever thought of trying that for bait... Now I know why I get skunked this time of year...

Yep that perked me up alright. Here I thought a big Channel was caught...man, I hate those pesky mudders.

Oh, I think Yote quit fishing. Maybe he found himself a new hobby?

As for Benson Marina, is it finally drying out a bit now? It's getting close to soaking a crawler! There's a 30"er patiently waiting for a photograph with my camera.

Hey Derek, Yote tells me he's thinking about fishing again. Signed up for the new contest. Would be fun to see him again. Cutler is still high but not over the top high. I'm thinking about trying it this weekend. Don't plan on catching much but I need to get my toon set up and floating again. So might be a good shake down cruise. I won't be in the river yet. Need to avoid that on the toon while the flows are this high. Good luck if you try it. J

I went out to the creek tonight and threw a nightcrawler. Got a nice carp in the first 10 minutes and nothing after that.
I hadn't seen any sign of the carp even with all the flooded fields, so it was nice to get some decent tugs and a supply of bait.

Nice job, it's good to know they'll bite now. I watched some monsters on my camera a Bear Lake, but they wouldn't even consider my offering. But that was under the ice. Thanks for the update. J
