They would tie a big hook around one of the mouses hind legs and then set the mouse on a wooden shingle

That brings a new meaning to 's**t on a shingle' you know that mouse has to be scared to death!

This post has got to be on the top ten list. I may be sick but the thought of a mouse trying to get away and a big fish exploding the surface sends shivers down my spine. For those who think this just may be wintertime insanity may be right....but it does sound like fun!

Wingnut36 has the right idea. Go buy a couple mice and make sure you get a male and a female. Just leave them in the cage together and pretty soon you will have more mice than you know what to do with. I raised mice for my science teacher in high school so I could watch the frog we had in class eat them.

this link is to a site that sells an imitation mouse fly. scroll all the way to the bottom. It talks about how to set the hook and how the bass and trout hit if differently. Good info if your gonna try it with a live one I would think.

If you have one or more of these Sherman Traps (http://www.shermantraps.com/) and an empty field nearby you can catch plenty of voles and mice for your experiment. As a general rule voles have short tails and mice have long tails. The absolute best bait is rolled oats with peanut butter mixed in. Add enough peanut butter to make the oats oily but not enough to where they clump together. Makes for easy trap cleanup.

Damn - I missed an opportunity when I saw the prarie dogs swimming across Strawberry - I think I will make me some little harnesses with a big ol treble attached then I can dipnet one next time to rig up - do potguts bite? - ROLMAO - I know I could catch a B&C seagull at least. I might need a helium balloon rig though - they did not swim so well. Spit spit paddle paddle spit spit paddle paddle all the way across the narows. Trolling takes on a new meaning for sure - LMAO

Those hamsters sure do come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Some of them are real hairballs too. You fly tiers might want to give one a little buzz for some fur before you fling em at big musky. Give it a hair cut with a pattern design. Maybe tie it up with a little red yarn to give it that wounded bleeding appearance.

I usually just lurk, but I actually have something to contribute to this thread. It's called the Bettencourt rodent. They make a surface version and one that will dive a foot or two if it's brought in fast enough.

Ok I just read this whole thing I shot my coffee out my nose doin it but here is your answer. I use to use mice and stuff as bass bait often. I use to just huck them through their mouth do a gentle cast out near any structure. I caught all kinds of bass on it, chain pickeral, walleye, sauger, carp, catfish, basicly anything with a mouth big enough to swallow them. Heck I even seen blue gill and perch peck at them now that was comidy. Plus I lived in the middle of the woods so i would just go kick over a old log or go around flippin rocks over. I also seen bass swallow baby ducks and baby birds that hit the water. I seen them eat snapping turtles often also. Which is quit interesting to pull in a bass that had a turtle lodged in its throat. I even used a bat i found hanging off the side of a bridge after watchen on get knocked off the pillar near the water. Bass will eat anything heck i caught them on ciggerate butts before which was a massive accident when that happened to be out of bait and flicked a smoke in the water and watched a bass eat it which it gave me the idea to just try.
But fishin with mice not fun though if they get into a structure like a beaver dam or reeds and get ya tangled up that is one of you main things you got to becareful of is them getting ya hung up in some sorta something.

If you can catch a bass on cig butt it must've been one of those day's when everything works.
