Registering a personal pontoon - NJDiverDan - 09-28-2018

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to register my personal pontoon boat. I do not see a HIN number anywhere on it and I do not have a certificate of origin as I got it used. I also do not have a title or bill of sale. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

From searching looks like the consensus is to take the boat into DMV and figure it out. Any other insights?

Thanks,

If it does not have a motor and is under 10 feet long . It does not to be registered. It will need an invasive species sticker.

According to the Idaho Fish and Game site, one does not need a sticker if the thing is less than 10 feet long and inflatable. Here's a copy of their rules:

This includes:
motor boats,
jet boats,
canoes,
kayaks,
rafts,
drift boats

This does not include:
inflatable, non-motorized vessels less than 10 feet long

Thanks for the responses. I know the rules on the invasive species. I am looking for information on how to register it so I can put an electric motor on it for flat water fishing.

Not sure how you go about it, but that does require numbers on your boat. I think if you go to the DMV they might assign you numbers that will coincide with your registration and you'll need to figure out a way to attach those numbers to your boat.

Again, not sure how they do it, but I know it gets done.

That number you are looking for could be stamped on the bottom of the frame, I too thought there was no number on my pontoon to find it later on the underside. At that point I had already had a number assigned to it by the DMV here in Utah. I guess no big deal ,but that number could be stamped on your boat underneath on the frame.

My pontoon boat was also bought used ,so I had no info other then the physical description I gave them when I registered it . Just give them the description of the boat, and they should take care of it for you .

They will just assign you a HIN number then you can register it and get your numbers. It can be a real pain in the rear. I went in three times before I found the person that knew how to do it easily.

I have heard that, I got lucky, the lady that did mine knew exactly what to do, no issues .
