I have seen that happen on several big trout I have caught as well. In hot weather trout don't do well after a hard fight. It's best not even to take them out of the water for a quick pic but for most of us that is a hard thing to do, especially if the hook does not come out easily.

Yep, tough on fish already out here with the heat, then a big fight, really hard on them.

It was also mentioned in the article that the fish was caught on a whole nightcrawler.  Possibility of deep hooking and trauma?  That was not covered.
