What the heck is that? - snook.hooker - 10-24-2005

I saw this swimming about and can't find it in any books - any ideas? Those things on the sides roll (flutter) to propel it...

It looks like some kind of File Fish.
What area did you see that? That could help to ID it.

Saw it in Holiday, FL, just north of Tarpon Springs. File fish? That'll give me another starting point for research - thanks TubeN2!

My eyes aren't that good, but it might also be some type of ray with it's tail cut off. I know we have alot of thoughtless anglers around here that will cut off thier tail and stinger and throw them back into the water defensless. Poor little guys.

I will stick with the file fish theory. It does resemble some of the ones that are common along the coast of FL.[cool]

I saw one of them things on that there invasion movie last week, I think they called it an ETAB. it wasnt glowing was it?

It looks like it is a ray of sorts, do you have a larger image or one that hasnt been edited down in size? you can post it as an attachment at 500 pixels wide.

that kinda looks like a manta ray to me but need a larger photo to be sure...

I would say a bat ray but they are common on the eastern coast of the pacific.
