Feeder Ditch - 8-12-06 - fish_a_holic - 08-12-2006 This morning, I stopped at a feeder ditch that connects to Wolf Creek, which in turn connects to Hodge Ditch, which is directly connected to the Kankakee River...this is one of those overlooked fishing areas that I constantly talk about in my articles. Fished for approximately 20 minutes, may go back later on after my chores. Using a craw tube T-rigged with a 1/8oz bullet sinker, on a 6.5' Fenwick fiberglass custom-built rod with 6lb. Cajun Red line caught 2 small bass. The ditch is up 3 feet from the torrential rains we had the day before, but I was casting to areas that 2 days ago were bone dry, but now had water in them...a trick I learned many years ago was that when the rivers and ditches are swollen from torrential downpours the fish move up into areas they've never been in before in search of 2 things - forage, and relief from the strong currents that are not normally present in the ditches. Nature Notes: saw 2 great blue herons, a large snapping turtle, a muskrat, and a mink ...All in all, another great time had by me, down by the Kankakee. [signature] |
