Can anyone ID this "grouper" species?! - Tigerfish69 - 04-22-2010
Hey all,
I am trying to find out the species of grouper that we caught just off nassau bahamas on light line tolling gear (not bottom fishing - sorry guys) in about 60ft water.
The fish had 10 definite dorsal spines and I've attached a couple of head shots as I'm told teeth are important in the id?! it weighed 22lbs
Local guys have id'd it as various things such as gag grouper, warsaw grouper, rockfish and poison fish!
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that I've speared a couple of those off of Ft. Lauderdale Beach. I hope it wasn't poisonous, because I ate it. I must say that it was pretty delicious as well. Let me know if you get a positive ID. Thanks.

22 lbs? Are you certain the weight is accurate?

I believe what you have here is a scamp grouper. Although with it weighing 22lbs, im not deffinately sure because thats very large for a scamp. The gills on a scamp come to a point right behind the gill plate just like in the picture. But usually the top and bottom of the tail are usually 1" longer than the rest of the tail.
And was the meat extremely white?
If this was a scamp it's by far the farthest thing from poisonus you will ever eat, its by far one of the best fish out there.--

A scamp has a stringy tail, spots vary a lot but when you look at the end of the tail on a gag vs a scamp I am certain this is a gag. I can't see the spread on the upper dorsal but, in my opinion the end of the tail is a dead give away. That is the first thing I look at.
