Every lake is different, but my standbys are white or brown/white belly.

To get started there are three basic baits I would buy, and I use them regularly. First, buy a Rapala Shallow running Shad Rap in Silver foil with a black back. That bait will catch anything, and I mean anything. Next get a Strike King KVD 1.5 or a 2.5 in the sexy shad color. Finally, get a chartuese Red Eye Shad by Strike King. It is a vibrating crankbait that you can use fast or slow depending on how deep the water is. With those 3 baits you can get started, have the basics covered, and as you learn you can expand. I normally stick with white grey shad imitator cranks. You will probably need different types. Shallow running and medium and deep. For the deep I always go with the square bills now they don't seem to get hung up as often.
I always have a red crayfish medium running crank-bait for the spawning season to run over the beds. They are excellent for the spawn and I've notice the color red for cranks is good for me here in NE Arkansas in the spring for some reason.

general rule ive found is the murkier the water is, the brighter the lure, the clearer the water is, the more naturally colored lure you use....
the river where i fish at is relatively clear, i can see the bottom quite clearly so i use naturally colored crankbaits
