Re: [Floor12] Pike? - davetclown - 03-17-2014

if you are ever in doubt. turn it belly up and look at the jaw.

there are tiny pin holes along the side.

the number of pin holes will tell you if it is a northern or a musky.

4 is pike
7 is musky

the best I can tell is that what you have is a northern.

I will take a photo of the holes I am talking about and get it loaded up for you in a week or two. "next time I get to the library.

Yes it is a pike. I see dark markings on the tail fins, where the chain pickerel has no markings on the tail fins. Pike are a lot of fun on the ice with tip ups and jigging. I attached a photo of a pike a client caught this past ice season. It was 43" and weighed 20+ lbs. It was caught on a jig stick in 5 feet of water while perch fishing. Pike do get awesomely big in some of the deep cold ponds and lakes here in Vermont. Good luck to you next ice season!
