Oregon Fisheries Update

October 8th – October 14th, 2004

Fisheries Update: : Fall Chinook fishing on Tillamook Bay is underway! Don't go without the knowledge you need to pursue Oregon's largest strain of salmon. Get tech report #7 which details the Tillamook Bay fishery or tech report #16 which details how to catch these fish on bobbers from our secured web site. These reports and several more are available at http://www.theguidesforecast.com/techrpt.shtml.

The Columbia River sturgeon re-opener went as expected- Awesome! Both bank and boat fisheries in the gorge scored quality keepers on the opener. The swifter the water, the better the result for larger fish, including oversize fish.

Salmon anglers are still doing quite well for upriver brights in the same area. A combination trip offers some excellent opportunity for those prepared to pursue both species. Backtrollers are doing best.

Tillamook Bay produced some excellent catches towards the bay entrance and in the ocean this week. Ocean conditions are forecasted to become large by the weekend making the “big pond” a dangerous place to pursue salmon. There are still very few fish over 30 pounds in the creel but the numbers are making up for the lack in size. Spinner fishing slowed earlier in the week.

North Coast rivers are too low to drift successfully and the tidewater sections have too low a flow for successful bobber fishing. The sculpin are hungry however!?
Nestucca anglers have seen Fall chinook action periodically and rainfall over the weekend will present additional opportunities at this and other coastal rivers. See the forecast see the full version of TGF has details, locations and specific techniques.

The Nehalem system busted wide open (for one day anyway) on Monday for herring trollers at the jaws. Limit fishing was experienced by some boats but all the action took place on the outgoing tide which is not uncommon on these small tide exchanges.

The Siletz has been very slow over the last week and the Yaquina River has been fail to good.

The lower Umpqua and Winchester Bay has been slow to fair for salmon trollers. Steelhead fishing is slow to fair upstream. Coos River has been good.

Coho fishing has been good on the lower Rogue especially around Gold Beach although many of the fish landed are unclipped. Steelhead fishing has been good in places upstream for adults and half-pounders.

The Siletz and Clackamas should offer decent fishing after the rain which is forecast for Friday and Saturday. The North Santiam remains a slow but scenic fishing destination.

Trout will be stocked this week in the Willamette Valley at Henry Hagg Lake, Mt. Hood Pond, Detroit Reservoir, Dexter Reservoir and Taylor Lake.

Soap Box

Since this is a fishing publication, it's no surprise The Guide's Forecast, LLC is endorsing Measure 34 this election. Measure 34 balances the needs of fish, wildlife and clean water with timber harvest on the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests. Since sportanglers on the North Coast have witnessed the closure of 5 of its 6 wild fish fisheries in just the last 13 years, it's clear that we need a change of direction when managing the “hatcheries” (the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests) that these fish need to survive in. But before we get into some critical points of this measure, the campaign needs all the help it can get to get this important message out to the voters. Remember, this measure is the best chance we have to recover these wild fish and the hopes that we may once again have a consumptive fishery for wild coho, steelhead, cutthroat trout, spring Chinook and chum salmon. After all, shouldn't it be an angler's choice as to whether they want to keep a salmon and not environmental factors driving these regulations?

A note from campaign staff can be found on the TGF home page.

VOTE YES ON MEASURE #34 ! ! !
