USCG assists sinking sailboat
#1
[font "Arial"][black]The Coast Guard assisted the crew of a sailboat after their vessel struck a buoy Thursday night 100 miles east of Cape Hatteras.

The crew of the sailing vessel Jet Stream called the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Portsmouth, Va., Thursday night at about 11:30 p.m. after their sailing vessel struck a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather buoy and began taking on water.

The RCC launched a C-130 rescue plane from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to drop a pump to the foundering vessel because the Jet Stream's pump was unable to keep up with the flooding. The crew of the Jet Stream was able to gain control of the flooding with the pump dropped to them.

The Coast Guard Cutter Block Island from Atlantic Beach, N.C., was doing a fisheries patrol in the area and diverted to the Jet Stream's position. The crew of the Block Island will escort the Jet Stream to the safety of the Chesapeake Bay. The two boats are due to arrive at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay Saturday at 6 a.m.

The Jet Stream was in a sailing race called the Carib 1500 departing from Hampton, Va., and heading for Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. The Cresendo, a sailing vessel participating in the race, stayed with the Jet Stream until the Block Island could get on scene to safely escort the Jet Stream to safety.
