EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.
FRENCHMAN LAKE: This is one of the best times of year to fish here. Fish will remain active around the dam area until there is a freeze. Sheep Creek specials and crystal snails fished with a type two uniform sink line and crystal buggers and Mohair leeches fished the same way will do the trick. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. LAKE DAVIS: Fishing is still pretty good. The water temperature is dropping fast and fishing should start to taper off soon. Wooly buggers and leeches fished with a type two sinking line in 6-10-feet of water have been best. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.
Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com.

TRUCKEE RIVER: The river is still fishing very well. Anglers are catching trout from Verdi to Tracy. Small nymphs have been most effective. Copper John’s in sizes 18-22 are a good bet. Warmer afternoons are also a plus. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. www.renoflyshop.com.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fly-fishing has remained pretty steady for the past few weeks. Most anglers are catching two to 15 fish a day. The fish are spread out pretty good so keep moving until you find fish. Warrior Point, the North Nets and Wino Beach have all been worth a try. The martini olive fly has been working well with the northern light beetle a close second. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474. WILDHORSE: The lake is still open and fishing is good. Steve Trinto caught two cutbows weighing 3 and 3 1/2 pounds gutted in 30 minutes. Don Meccle and Marc Weldon from Nevada City, Calif., came in with limits averaging 2 pounds gutted. Their 10 fish weighed 23.9 pounds. Wildhorse Resort, 758-6471 or email: dunns@direcway.com.

EAGLE LAKE: The water has stayed warm later in the year than usual. This is common in western reservoirs when they are low. Fishing should be picking up any day now with the colder overnight temperatures. Rust-colored leeches and wooly buggers fished with either a floating line or an intermediate line are commonly used techniques. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

CROWLEY LAKE: Closed.

UPPER OWENS RIVER: Closed.

LOWER OWENS: Water flow is 105 c.f.s. Fishing has been good with a variety of nymphs such as hare’s ears, pheasant tails and copper johns. Also, some good dry fly-fishing in the middle of the day with baetis duns and Adams. www.performanceguideservice.com
