Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
Pete Gill from Nevada State Parkssaid that the ice on the reservoir is five inches thick around the dock and a few anglers ventured out and ice fished. A few anglers actually caught their limit of five trout using PowerBait and worms.
Ben Johnson from Nevada State Parks said that the ice is not yet thick enough for ice fishing.
Cold weather and the weekly rainbow trout plants are bringing striped bass close to shore, and anglers are having luck in catching fish that weigh 5 pounds or more, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).
One shore angler told NDOW that he connected with a 4-pound striper on New Year’s Eve while casting a Cordell Spot lure at Hemenway Harbor. Another angler who was also fishing that night at Hemenway had a very large fish break his line after fighting it for 10 minutes.
Trout are hiding in brush around Special Events Beach and stripers are coming in to feed on the recent planters. Anglers are using top water lures as well as anchovies to catch the fish.
Boaters are still having good luck in the Las Vegas Wash area. They are taking stripers with jigs, surface lures and by drifting with anchovies.
NDOW will stock rainbow trout Friday (1/7/05) at Hemenway, Horsepower, Pumphouse and North Saddle coves.
Anglers who are driving on unpaved roads should be very cautious because of washouts and debris caused by recent storms.
[#990033]LAKE MOHAVE[/#990033]
Boaters who have been fishing out of Cottonwood Cove continue to have difficulty locating striped bass. In addition to the poor results, this week’s storms have made for unpleasant fishing conditions.
Typically, anglers have had some luck for stripers that weigh 10 pounds or more following NDOW’s trout plants. Trout will be stocked on Friday (1/7/05) at Aztec Wash and on Jan. 14 at Cottonwood and Placer coves and Willow Beach.
Dana Johnson, Installation Manager, said that windy and rainy conditions caused some open water on the reservoirs that are not accessible from shore. The water around the dams and boat docks are frozen but conditions are not safe for ice fishing.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Rainbow trout will be planted Friday (1/7/05) in ponds at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
