Anglers who were fishing at the White Pine County lake over the weekend told NDOW that the fishing was somewhat slow, but the fish that were taken were around 19 to 20 inches. Fish are being caught in deep water near the dam and in the channel between the upper and lower lakes. Sparkle PowerBait, worms and marshmallows are catching the fish while the favorite fly has been the flashback hare’s ear nymph.
Pete Gill from Nevada State Parks said that heavy rains this past week have caused flooding throughout the area. Flooded roads have made the area inaccessible and no anglers were noted fishing.
[#990033]ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR[/#990033]
Ben Johnson from Nevada State Parks said that warmer weather and rainy conditions have caused the snow to melt and the reservoir has risen 6 feet; however, the water has become very murky. Ice on the reservoir has thinned, and it is not safe for ice fishing. No anglers were noted fishing the previous week.
Anglers are expected to start returning to the lake following the recent storms that drenched southern Nevada. As they return, they should find fairly good winter fishing for striped bass in the Boulder Basin.
Reports received recently from anglers by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) indicate that boaters continue to catch stripers from upper Las Vegas Wash to Sand Island. Most of the fish are around a pound and are being taken by chumming and fishing with anchovies.
Fishing from shore has been productive for stripers following NDOW’s trout plants. A few fish weighing 10 pounds or more are being seen immediately after the plants. One angler told NDOW that he had a large striper roll on his Pencil Popper lure several times Friday ( 1/7/05) evening at North Saddle Cove.
Storms have made for murky water conditions in some areas which negatively impacts the fishing. NDOW said anglers will have better success by avoiding these areas and looking for places where the water is clear.
Creel census clerks said they did not see any anglers at fish cleaning stations in the Overton Arm over the weekend.
NDOW will stock rainbow trout Friday ( 1/14/05) at Hemenway, Horsepower, North Saddle and Pumphouse coves.
Caution is urged when driving on unpaved roads at the recreation area. Storms have left debris on roads and caused some washouts.
[#990033]LAKE MOHAVE[/#990033]
There were very few fishers at the lake during the weekend and early this week because of the recent storms. Prior to the arrival of the storms, the fishing was slow for striped bass but fairly good for rainbow trout following the plants.
Anglers who have been fishing for stripers following the trout plants at Cottonwood Cove have had some success, including catching some that weigh more than 10 pounds. Casting large lures that are similar in appearance to trout have been taking the fish.
Cottonwood Cove and Willow Beach will be stocked Friday ( 1/14/05) by NDOW.
Daniel Maes, Assistant Area Supervisor, said that the unstable weather pattern brought in very windy conditions that did not allow the ice to thicken; therefore, conditions are not safe for ice fishing. Low temperatures have been in the single digits and the highs were in the mid 30s.
[#990033]URBAN PONDS[/#990033]
Fishing was fair for rainbow trout last week for anglers who were using PowerBait and marshmallows. The trout also are hitting streamers such as wooly buggers and Cave Lake Specials while the flies are sinking.
NDOW’s next trout plants will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.
