EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to rapidly changing weather conditions in the Sierra and Northern Nevada, anglers are urged to call ahead to the sources listed at the end of each area description for reports on the latest road and water conditions.

LAKE DAVIS: The mild weather conditions have made ice-fishing a pleasant experience. The experience has been better than the catching for most, however on Saturday and Sunday, Portola's Kevin Bassette, and two friends from Placerville, were the exception. On Saturday they landed eight fish, weighing a total of 20 pounds, then on Sunday, they landed nine fish, the largest weighing 3.9 pounds. Their bait of choice was a mixture of Powerbait fished just off the bottom. The ice is reported to be 16 inches thick. Access is good on the east side road down to Mallard Cove. Dollard’s Sierra Market (530) 832-5251. www.dollardsmarket.com. Email — dollards@psln.com. Mark Fore & Strike, 786-3474 or 322-9559

TRUCKEE RIVER: Still fishing fairly well. Ice is starting to disappear. Fish are still being caught throughout the river system. Indicator nymphing with small nymphs such as zebra midges and WD 50s has been good. The fish are mostly in the deeper, slower pools right now. The middle of the day has been best. Be careful wading as there is some ice and snow in or around the banks. Some decent browns coming out. Best spinners include Panther Martins in white with black dots and black with yellow. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474, The Gilly, 358-6113.

PYRAMID LAKE: Fishing has been good at the marina in front of Crosby’s Lodge. The south end is producing about two fish per hour. Good size, about 24-26-inch average, 5-7-pounds. Try white crystal wooly buggers with a popcorn beetle. Or try purple wooly buggers with black and red tails. Best lures include firetiger and U-20 Flatfish. Anglers trolling with rainbow patterns and tui chub colors are doing well, down about 25-40 feet. Lyman lures are also still doing well, try frog patterns or white with pink stripes. Also, green with red dots. The Gilly, 358-6113.

MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Opening day is Saturday. The outlook for this year is very good. The water tables are up and the hatchery program has helped the fish population dramatically. Hinkson slough is the place to catch trout, usually with zebra midges on the opener. Olive wooly buggers can also be effective using a type two sinking line. Bait is prohibited. Reno Fly Shop, 825-3474.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Flows at 3,700 c.f.s. Redding to Anderson, Calif. As weather allows, fly-fishing for rainbows is producing some nice trout in the Redding to Anderson area. PT's and Micro May Fly nymphs are working well.
Opening day of salmon fishing on the Sacramento River will be July 16

WALKER LAKE: Fishing remains good. Boaters reporting 20-30 fish per day. Trolling Tor-P-Dos, Flatfish and Apex in shallow water, 10-30-feet deep. Shore fishing is also good using Powerbait and casting Tor-P-Dos. Shore fishermen reporting 10-15 fish per day in the 2-4-pound range. Ed Jones, Bait and Tackle Shop, (w) 945-2525. (h) 945-2513.
