Favorite hooks
#1
What are your favorite salwater and freshwater hooks?

I've yet to find these traits in a hook.

ONe that doesn't easily, stays sharps and comes sharp, durable, and one that won't kill pinhead chovies but yet big enough to put dines on, and also one that won't straighten.I know someone has to know of a hook that has everything or close to everything listed. If it doesn't please list and why it's your favorite hook. Also put model #.

It's a good question Hara and I am happy to declare my (allround) favourite which I have only come across recently.

They are a Japanese stainless - cone cut - hook and probably the best comparison I can give you is a Mustad 7691 SS, except these are slightly heavier in the shaft and "razor" sharp. Also a bit cheaper than the Mustad as well.

Were only using from 6/0 upwards and they are long lasting, plus tough as nuts.

We have just switched our glow in the dark jigs, skirted lures and baitfish profile - flex - trolling lures to them because they are the best hook that I have found (so far) that meet the grade IMO.

What sized hooks are you using for your baits at present?

Jeff (Troutman) over at the fishing polls board bought some of these hooks from us recently, so you might want to ask him what he thinks of them as well. He's planniing to fish them shortly on a 3 day trip.

If you take a look at the post down below I think I left a link their to an image of one.

I have to agree that finding the right hooks for the right job is always a challenge and the same applies to jig hooks from my experience. That's were I believe the saltwater Mustad's come into their own for strength and durability.

I will be interested to hear what other anglers like to use, because there are a number of popular brands around now with J hook and circle hook patterns that are getting a lot of use as well.

Owner's, Eagle Claw and others are being spoken of a lot and with mixed results on some too it seems.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve - The MJB
BFT Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

I want hooks for all sizes from macks to pinhead.the maruto sound like they would kill a pinhead really fast.Do you make a light wire version? The one for pinhead must be a light wire hook

Hara

As mentioned above, 6/0 and upwards is what we are using here. What hooks have you tried on the pin heads and how are you securing them to the hook?

If your hooking them (barb up and from the bottom up) through the lower lip, or just under the dorsal fin, then they will not die regardless of the hook your using.

If your looking for fine gauge hooks, then SSL-12 gamakatsu hooks will do the job, and yet will not last as long. Like most chemically sharped hooks, they too loose their sharpness in saltwater.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator - Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hara

Not sure where the others are. If your going that small then my other suggestion is 34039NPSS Mustads. I imagine others will drop in comments when they cruise by.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator - Lures/Baits
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hara,

I do both fresh and saltwater fishing. When I choose hooks for freshwater they are usually very tiny, sometimes as small as 18's for powerbait, and as large as 8 or 10 for worms or plastics. I always use mustads, gold for the smaller (easier for me to see) and black for the larger (blends in with the water/bait).

I assume though you are asking more about saltwater hooks, so I will answer that a little better. I buy both Mustads and Owner. I use the Owner's myself and if someone needs a hook, I will give them my Mustad's. Of course, this can be very expensive at times but I really like the way the Owner's cut into the bait and also into the fish. I typically use the Owner's 1/0 or 3/0 live bait hooks on anchovies and sardines depending on their size. IMO, I believe that the way the Owner hooks make a cut in the bait minimizes the hole that it makes and hence the bait will live longer and rarely fall off. I almost always hook live chovies through the lower jaw and up through the nose and sometimes just through the nose. I find that the first method keep the fish alive and kicking a lot longer.

I just purchased some larger hooks from Demon Jigs and will be trying them out this weekend on the Islander. I'll report back how well they stand up. At first glance they look very solid and I already can report that they are VERY sharp. Smile

Also, the picture that Steve posted (see "Hot Saltwater Hooks") in regards to the Maruto hooks does NOT do these hooks justice. It is a very clean and sharp hook and I'm positive it will do the job!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I've been a little busy lately taking care of things at home before I leave.

Jeff Jost
