DEP Begins Fall Trout Stocking

Stockings begin earlier this fall, new Urban Fishing Areas
among the areas to be stocked, Low stream flows
may affect stockings of some areas!

FALL…when cool, crisp days, clear blue skies, bright white clouds, and vibrant foliage provide a spectacular backdrop for trout fishing! The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced that its autumn trout stocking will begin tomorrow September 13th. From mid-September through mid-October, DEP expects to release nearly 49,000 trout into selected waters throughout the state. Among the areas scheduled for stocking this fall are twenty-six lakes and ponds, twenty-two rivers and streams including eleven of the Trout Management Areas (TMA), four "Urban Fishing Areas", and nine Trout Parks.

DEP is pleased to announce the addition of the "Urban Fishing Areas", Bunnells Pond (Bridgeport), Keney Pond (Hartford), Lake Wintergreen (Hamden) and Mohegan Park Pond (Norwich), to the fall schedule. These four lakes and ponds are intended to create and enhance fisheries in urban areas as part of the DEP’s "No Child Left Inside" initiative. "These areas were stocked with trout last spring, with catfish this summer, and now will be stocked with trout again this fall. They should provide excellent opportunities for children and families to get outside and enjoy fishing without having to travel far," said DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy.

Also intended to be attractive areas for families to get together and fish are the designated Trout Parks. All the Trout Parks that DEP plans to stock this fall will be stocked twice, and four will be stocked three times. "Our designated Trout Parks have become quite popular with anglers," said Commissioner McCarthy. "Trout Parks are great places for a family to spend an afternoon fishing and picnicking, especially during the height of the foliage season."

Anglers can look forward to a number of changes to the fall stocking program. This year, stockings are starting earlier in the season and they will be conducted over a more extended period than in previous years. The earlier start is designed to take advantage of the longer day-length and the typically better late summer and early fall weather. The extended season will facilitate multiple stockings of a number of the more popular areas including the Trout Parks. Also, DEP will be releasing 9,000 large brown trout (greater than 12 inches in length) along with 40,000 standard size (9-12 inch) rainbow trout.

Anglers are advised that the current dry weather conditions may cause a number of changes in this fall’s stocking schedule. Despite some recent rains, flows are well below average for this time of the year in many of the state’s rivers and streams, especially in northeastern Connecticut. Water levels may be too low to permit releasing trout into some of the rivers and streams currently scheduled for stocking. "Unless we get a substantial amount of rainfall in the next week, we will have to evaluate the conditions for each river a day or two before we plan to stock," said Commissioner McCarthy. "If flows are too low in a river, trout will instead be stocked into more suitable areas, most likely a lake or pond." Updates on the status of trout stocking will be published in DEP’s Weekly Fishing Report, and if needed, in additional news releases.

Trout Parks have a two-fish per day creel limit. Fishing in all sixteen Trout Management Areas is catch-and-release only during the fall. Regulations vary on many of the other waters to be stocked this fall. The DEP advises anglers to check fishing regulations in their 2007 Connecticut Angler’s Guide. Guides are available from Town Clerks, many bait & tackle stores, or by contacting the DEP Inland Fisheries Division (860-424-FISH).
