Urban fishing today
#1
So it cooled off a little today so I went to do a little
urban float tubing.
Nothing special, just a day on the water. Few fish
and just a very nice way to spend the day.

( I wish I was on Rons river tubing trip [Smile])

When I go bass/bluegill fly fishing, I take my
-sage bass 9wt 7'11'' (heavy duty) ,floating line
-then a 7wt 9' , intermediate line.
-and 5wt 9' floating with extra interm. reel (I dont buy extra
spools, I buy extra reels with spools just in case[Smile]).

For trout I like my 5wt and 7wt if the wind p/u a lot.

I recognize the Sage Bass, but isn't an 11 wt line or 330 grain more what it requires?

I can't tell the make of the other rods.

Reels, one looks like the Okuma...what are they?

I have been looking at the Sage Bluegill as it is more an 8 wt.
10 weight is just a bit much for me, specially for the bass and Bluegill I go after.
I have two 8 weights right now so it is tough to justify, but one is 9' and one is 10' and that 7'11"sounds really nice.

Heck I was landing 11" Bluegill on my Orvis Far and Fine.....that was interesting!

When it comes to the new sage bass/bluegill rods, its
not just the rod but ALSO the fly line. Its made to deliver
big and heavy flies and bugs. Nothing delicate, just
big stuff. The line comes with the rod.
I like it a lot for the big stuff. I dont think that I would be
using it for 8'' trout [Smile].
I hope this helps

I get you on the specialty lines and that is a big plus

The Sage Largemouth is the more powerful model of the two new 7’ 11” Sage Bass Fly Fishing Rods and is designed to cast short belly, weight forward lines that weigh 330 grains for the front 30’ of the line; basically an equivalent of an 11 weight fly line.

The Sage Smallmouth is the lighter duty model of the two new 7’ 11” Sage Bass Fly Fishing Rods and is designed to cast short belly, weight forward lines that weigh 290 grains for the front 30’ of the line; basically an equivalent of an 10+ weight fly line.

The Sage Bluegill is the lightest of three new 7’ 11” Sage Bass Fly Fishing Rods and is designed to cast short belly, weight forward lines that weigh 230 grains for the front 30’ of the line; basically an equivalent of an 8 weight fly line.

They are all light weight rods also.
Like my 8 weight weighs less than most 5 weights. Makes it a joy to cast the big stuff.

Boy you guys do know your toys! I have two flyrods...do I know a thing about them, boy I don't! I just know how to cast it out. I pick only one out as I know how to use it than the other one.....
No idea what u guys are saying about 8wt, 10wt and lines.....
Is it too much for me to ask what all that is?

Fly Rods go by the weight where bait or spin go by pound.
Fly rods are designed for different species of fish and their weight.
Example:

1 - 3 weight rods, small mountain creeks and fish maybe in the 12" range
4 - 5 weight is a good all around weight rod. Mostly Trout.
The heavier rods like the 8 are good for casting BIG BUGS associated to bass fishing.

Any fish can be landed with a smaller rod if you fight it from the butt of the rod and let the rod do the work, but, it can be harder on the fish.
I have seen 24" trout landed with a 1 weight.

Pick what species you want to target, then get the weight of rod AND the action (that is the most important thing and everyone is different).

But now there is also specialty lines to go with that. It is getting crazy, but when you know what you want, it is nice to know it is out there.

So, Peter,
What "urban" area are you near?

NY, Chatanooga, Kansas City?
I'm not looking for you to post up your spot, but a city nearby would be nice.

Jim, in Salt Lake
