Catalina Report for 10/19
#1
Hey guys this is my first Saltwater report I hope that it is adequate.

We started off on the 7:15 Cat Express out of San Pedro. What a ride. Moves just a little too fast for trolling. Got to Avalon @8:30. The water was clear and beautiful just as I remember it from when I was diving there before.

My son, TubeNtoo was amazed at all the little fishies there at he docks and immediately started to rig up. I told him that we couldn't fish in that spot. There would be too many big boats in and out and they would tangle up his line.

His patients paid off and he started with the first catch of the day. A 1 1/2lb Calico. Please see attachment. I tried to get him to look at the camera but he did say that this was going to a fishing site and only the fish had to Smile.

We did get quite busy even though there were'nt too many fish biting. After that pic, the wife took the camera. So we were left to just fishing. There were a few more Calicos in the area as well as Opeleyes. Mackerals kept hanging around and were sporting a generous 5lb sticker on them. We also had a run in with a couple of small yellow tails. Really small though. TubeNtoo also caught a Sculpin. He thought it was cool looking until I told him to be carerful of the spines. There was also a good size school of Bonita hanging around the island. We were doing the salty fly swater on them. Lots of fun.

We caught the 6:45 boat back to San Pedro.

Score 2 anglers in C&R mode

Calicos 7

macks 3

yellowtail 2

bonita 5

sculpin(ouch) 1

Girabaldi 0 (thank God)

Hey there tubeN2,

Nice report. I'm glad there were enough fish to make things interesting. I've got a feeling you were using bait.

Some Japanese buddies of mine who have a club in LA sometimes go to Catalina to fish off the rocks for fish resembling their favorites in Japan. I believe they like to fish off the rocks just north of the auditorium in Avalon.

Their website is Cal-NUTS.com but it's hard to get on their site for some reason sometimes. Their site and fishing reports are all in Japanese anyway so.....

[cool] Except for the salty fly,[Image: flydealer_1759_6229691] we were using, squid, chovies and believe it or not, some leftover sausage from Luau Larrys breakfast buffet. It was the sausage that caught the sculpin so we stopped using it after that.

There was a guy next to me that hooked me up on the fly deal. He had about 20 bonitas from the early morning. Another guy was bagging macks right and left. We were on the fishing pier near lovers cove. Next time over there I want to go N of the Casino or over to Twin Harbors.
