I called it a timer but it's actually an hour meter. My main motor came with one when I bought it but kicker didn't so I bought one for it. These are quite useful for keeping tabs on hours and mount directly to the motors, they are digital, have internal battery and a coil pickup that mounts direct to #1 sparkplug wire. It works when motors are running only. The other way it's done is installing dash meters next to your gages but I don't have room on my dash at this time. Amazon provides a few and this is the link of the one I bought. Newer motors now how internal meters but most of us don't have the means to download the codes with engine time.
