Welcome to the site. Your best help for issues with shims like this would be to contact Okuma, they are good about giving help to people that buy their gear, sorry I can't be of more help. One thing that you said that did catch my attention was the handle comes unscrewed, not sure if you are aware of this or not but you can only turn your spinning real in one direction, if you try going the other direction your handle will unscrew, so that could be the issue there.
