It seems like that place claims someone, or nearly claims someone about every year. I've heard way too many stories for this ice fisherman to want to venture out onto this piece of ice. As many years as I've ice fished, I still consider myself a novice in reading ice conditions, and I plan to keep it that way.

I fished near there today. The ice was about ten inches thick. There were four wheeler tracks, so that would seem to be a good sign, but the ice cracked below my feet walking onto it and then a foot went through near shore, but further out it had good thickness. I fished over 34 to 73 feet of water off the face of an underwater cliff. My Nils auger went through easy and ice tent anchors went in too easy. I pray we hear the missing person is found to be well.

How was the fishing? I'm hoping to go up Tuesday after some colder temps move through. I'll probably go up north more in the Buckboard / Confluence areas. Was planning on taking the 4 wheeler but after this accident might have to rethink that.

Can't imagine what a fun day gone that wrong would feel like. My condolences to the family. Life is so precious.

Just because you see four wheeler tracks doesn't mean the ice is safe!! Their was plenty of tracks where I went but the ice detiriated a lot over night, and in the morning I walked right into the water where the ice was fine the day before.

Right! I read up on the diferent kinds of deteriorated ice.

Yesterday, when I augered and screwed in ice tent screws, both were noticeably too easy and the ice had water in it.

There were two tents and ice fishing neighbors before I started. I also evaluated my risk and decided I was willing to fall through because I'm physically able to tolerate it, get out, recover body heat and change into extras of warm clothing.

Perhaps the ice will be good late December. It's bright and sunny now and I'm wearing a tee shirt.

I'm glad the family will be able to put her to rest. And the 100 fow is excacly where a big pressure ridge ran. It looked bad Friday with ice that had pushed up to 2-3 feet in areas. I hope they will eventually find the outher body also.
