LANCASTER COUNTY PUBLIC FISHING LAKE TO BE LOWERED FOR RAMP CONSTRUCTION
#1
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources has begun lowering the level of Lancaster Reservoir in Lancaster County so a new public boat-launching ramp can be constructed.

The water level of Lancaster Reservoir, one of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) public fishing lakes, will be lowered over the next two weeks so a new public boat-launching ramp can be built adjacent to the lake's dam. The lake level will be lowered by about 6 feet. Construction on the new boat-launching ramp will begin in early February, with project completion expected by March 1. Upon completion of the new public ramp, the lake will be allowed to refill to its normal level, a process that will take about 15-30 days, depending on rainfall.

The boat-launching ramp project is a group effort including staff from DNR and the S.C. Department of Transportation with financial support from the Lancaster County Legislative Delegation, which has approved the use of $15,000 from the Lancaster County Water Recreation Fund.

Lancaster Reservoir is part of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources' Public Fishing Lakes program, designed to provide fishing to the public in areas of the state where the opportunity is lacking or where there are few public fishing lakes. This program provides more than 1,500 acres of public fishing lands to the anglers of South Carolina. These lakes provide anglers with opportunities for bank fishing, and with boat-launching facilities, fishing piers (some with barrier-free access) and picnic areas. Annually, more than 90,000 anglers use the DNR Public Fishing Lakes for recreational sport fishing. In areas of the state where few public fishing locations exist, these lakes provide opportunities for bank fishing, and some have boat-launching facilities, fishing piers, nature trails and picnic areas. To receive information, write DNR Public Fishing Lakes, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202 or call (803) 734-3886. A listing of the lakes and regulations can be found on the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.sc.us/etc/rulesregs/img/freshfishing.pdf

The Sport Fish Restoration Program funds operations of the state's Public Fishing Lakes. The federal program follows the "user-pay" concept by providing revenue from an excise tax on fishing equipment and motorboat fuel.
