DNR’s Lake Michigan coastal program to present grant workshop Feb. 25 at Dunes State Park
#1
The need is there. The federal dollars are available. The ideas are there. And questions regarding what types of projects are eligible are there as well. The Lake Michigan Coastal Program staff will present a workshop to address these issues.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, program staff will present a workshop to explain the next round of grants. The informal question and answer session will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center. The session will give potential applicants an opportunity to learn about the grant application process and understand the criteria for eligible projects.

The DNR’s Lake Michigan Coastal Program has federal funding available to support projects that preserve and restore natural, cultural and historic resources in the Lake Michigan region. The program seeks to increase partnerships among local, state, and nonprofit organizations through providing financial and technical support to the region.

Those eligible to apply for funds include: [ul] [li]units of local government, such as municipalities, townships, counties, and towns; [li]area-wide agencies, including county and regional planning agencies; [li]state agencies; [li]state colleges, universities, and other state institutions of higher learning; [li]conservancy districts and port authorities; [li]basin commissions; and [li]non-profit organizations 501©3 (Special Conditions Apply)[/li][/ul]

Projects eligible for grant funding must be located entirely in the northern portion of Lake, Porter, or LaPorte counties and should address one of the areas identified as a priority in the coastal program document. A map of the grant area is available on the Web at: www.in.gov/dnr/lakemich/pdf/cpa.pdf

The next grant cycle, called Round II of the 2003 funding cycle, has two components — $600,000 for large-scale project grants (maximum award of $100,000 each), and small-scale, short-term, non-construction grants (maximum award of $5,000 each).

The Lake Michigan coastal program will begin accepting applications Feb. 20. Applications for the grants are due March 31.
