Sockeye Salmon Fishing
#1
One day after work I decided off a whim to try it out with the family for the first time. Loaded up the boat and headed out since the online reports looked amazing for the day. when we got to the Sandheads lighthouse we were shocked to see a hundred or so boats trolling and catching fish right there. We went out past them and hit the 400 foot mark and got the trolling gear down. As soon as the lines were down the camera wasn't even set up all four rods went off and we got three sockeye in the boat and an undersized chinook. Then we put on the camera and the rest of the crazy action that you'll see continued. Lots of fun with the wife who was just a couple weeks from delivering our third daughter and my two other girls. Everyone was in on the action. What a mess at points but so much fun. Caught a hatchery coho and a nice sized Chinook salmon right as the sun was setting as well. We felt super fortunate for first timers to be heading home with 9 salmon in a couple of hours on the water after work.

Wow, that was some fast catching, looks like fun, What happened to your bigger boat? What kind of reels are those you are using?

The Trophy is sitting beside my house with an out of commision Mercury Optimax. After spending 3000 to fix it the spring of 2017 and having it fail on us after two trips it was super disappointing. Took it in this spring and the mechanic kind of said shouldn't invest any more money into fixing it. So I'm waiting till I can afford a new outboard engine and repower the boat hopefully for next summer.

Well that's too bad but I feel your pain because I had just about the same thing happen this year. I found a good used engine for my boat, with low hours and although it cost some serious $$, I'm happy with how it turn out. I now have a better motor that will likely last me for a very long time.
What was the reason you changed all your downrigging reels to the type you are now using?

Oh sorry forgot to answer that question. Those are Diawa Mooching reels. I've been using them since moving to canada and fishing salmon. This is what we use on the west coast for trolling. I find it a lot more fun to fight the fish on these and they are pretty easy to set with the downrigger since the line can just pay out as the ball goes down.

Is this the same reel:

Can't say I know anyone but you that has one. Do they have clickers, so they make noise when line goes out?
