Whites on The Blue 12/8/2018
#1
[#500000]Had a wonderful day catching whitefish yesterday off Second Point of the beautiful blue Bear Lake. Spent a rather memorable day with my good friend Nate and my brother Terry up there. We caught our limits of whites, four cuts, and one carp.

Nate is truly what I call a "natural" at fishing. Some may think of him as the "fish whisperer". But whatever we may nickname him, he is just plain good at fishing. I watched him catch white after white after white while I nursed snag after snag after snag. It wasn't until I switched from 1/8 oz. jig heads to 1/16 oz. did I stop snagging and start catching whites. Nate stayed with his custom poured 1/8 oz. heads all day and did a great job of schooling me and my brother.

Here is a short video of his technique:

The lures that worked best for Nate was the 2 ½ inch Gulp Mino in watermelon/pearl with a round 1/8 oz. dark green (almost black) jig head tipped with a ½ inch piece of worm.

The lures that worked best for me were the red/white crappie jig and a transparent with salt and pepper glitter crappie jig with 1/16 oz. fast-load jig heads tipped with a ½ inch piece of worm.

Towards the end of the day, Nate hooked up on one and said, "Oh, this is a big one!!" From the way his rod was banging and bending, we were all thinking it might be a mack. But it wasn't … it was this big ole female white:

[#500000]It measured 22" long and 4 lbs. 9 oz. Definitely, the biggest Bonneville whitefish I have ever seen.

Yesterday was just one of those really good days of fishing … catching limits, catching BIG whites, and spending time with the best of family and friends.

Thanks guys.

Thanks again Ralph and Terry for a great time on Bear Lake yesterday. It will be a memorable trip for years to come. I’m still working on the paperwork to turn it in to see if it will be a record breaker. I should be done today and have it emailed over, then we’ll see what happens.

Congratulations on that big whitefish! So were you able to get the local grocery store to weigh it or did you have to take it somewhere else?

Haven't heard much from you lately, TD. I was worried you might be ailing or something. Maybe it has to do with that old saying about removing all doubt. BTW, I don't know if I ever thanked you for the ice fligs--I appreciate them and am about itching myself to death to get out and field test them. Will let you know how they work.

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

I just checked and the state record for Bonneville Whitefish is 4 lbs. 8 oz. and 20 3/4". So if the numbers hold up he has indeed caught a new state record!

BTW it was good "meeting" you in the KSL Outdoors video I watched to learn more about how to catch whitefish--good stuff. Unfortunately, I went on the one crappy fishing day this year and didn't catch one. Oh darn, I guess I'll have to go fishing AGAIN. It's a burden but I'm holding up pretty well so far.

Yes gmwahl, we took it to the shell station where you told us to go. They let us weigh it on a produce scale there. That scale said it was 4pounds 12ounces. Once we saw that, we were looking for a certified scale. That’s when Old Coot called horlachers meat in Logan and asked if they had a certified scale ( they did ) then he asked if we could weigh the fish, they said no at first. Old Coot said it was a once in a life time fish, that’s when they said bring it by. There scale said it was 4pounds 9ounces.

PS by the way it was good to talk to you in person. Thanks again

[#0000FF]Ailing? Sorta. Since I gave up ice fishing I have severe withdrawal pains about this time every year. But as a tuber I am already sick of snow and ice. Talk about conflicted.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Glad you got the goodies and hope they treat you well. Others have been giving good reports on them. Hope you are able to get in some quality time on the ice soon.

Heck TubeDude, I may have to take you up on both of those offers. Unfortunately either one of those will have to wait until next year, I’m out of play days until next year.
