Northern Pike Fishing North of Freezing

Ice fishing for Northern Pike in Alberta in the frigid cold temps of January. It was below -20C plus a finger freezing wind chill. I think it parts of the video you can see the frost bite setting in on my nostrils and my eye lashes are all frozen up. Despite the cold the fish finally decided to move and we caught a whole bunch of very respectable northern pike including the biggest one at 38 inches. A great day on the ice after a very slow week and a half of fishing. This is how we tip up fish for pike with big herring for bait on stationary tip ups when the holes are freezing so fast that you can't use many other methods. Hope you enjoy the video. Nice video, thanks for posting it. Do tip ups like the ones you use not freeze solid when you use them like that? Seems like some of them are harder to get up than others but do the covers keep them from freezing solid? Recently I heard about using something called a bubble box to keep holes from freezing up, so I bought one and tried it this week and it worked great but the temps were not as cold as you were fishing in. Hopefully next week we will try it in some colder temps and see how it works.

The hole still freezes up when it's that cold out but not as fast since the wind is not cooling the surface temp and the water warms the space slightly. There are some by Frabill that have foam on the bottom which may work a little better.
