Stolen BFT Posts
#1
I was just looking at the DWR interactive map for fishing. When I clicked on Willard Bay Forecast, I was surprised and later somewhat Angry about what I read. It contained 2 word for word posts from our forum that was recently posted. One of the 2 was mine. The reporter to DWR must be one lazy AH to steal our posts. Does our monitors know that DWR does this. I had no idea.
This is their forecast:
" Reports for Willard Bay are mixed: some anglers are doing well while others are struggling to catch fish. There’s an abundant crop of young shad in the reservoir now, so the fish have plenty to eat. As mentioned, some anglers are doing well, though. One angler caught 7 or 8 channel catfish, and about the same number of small bluegill, fishing north of the South Marina in 8 to 14 feet of water on July 29. Another angler who fished from a boat that morning caught 2 large wipers, a channel catfish, a smallmouth bass and a 12-inch yellow perch trolling between 2.5 – 3 mph using either a rattle-trap or lipped crankbait, both fire tiger in color. Tips for catching fish this time of year include downsizing your lures (to better match the shad the predators are feeding on) and watching your sonar until you find fish that are active and willing to bite."
What do you other forum users think about this???
I believe Fat-Biker had the original post for these comments.

If you can't write it better yourself copy someone else words, remember plagiarism is your friend!

Yeah this isn't the first time that they have used peoples post's for their fishing reports.

You better send them a bill for services provided. [Sad]

As I recall from High School English class, if you use someone else's words, you are suppose to post a reference note and give credit to the source.

Where else would they get actual angler reports?

Unless you copyright it, anything you post on a public message board is in fact in the public domain. There's nothing illegal or even immoral about using it. I also note that the DWR report is not word-for-word. It's paraphrased, which clears it of plagiarism anyway.

Hey Burley I’ve noticed it for quite some time now, but I’ve taken it as more of a compliment that BFT is the source of the best fishing information. Would be nice if they gave mention of BFT occasionally but maybe that shows favoritism. We also need to remember there are some great division employees that provide great reports on BFT to keep us informed on Bear Lake and the Gorge and other spots. So I think it’s a fair trade off for us. Hope you’re okay with it. Like Rocky mentioned it is public domain so we have no claim to our words after we hit send. Later Jeff

Yes, it is true that they are tapping into the best source of angling reports in Utah.
I wonder how much of a whopper tale they would repost. (Fake News) hummm!

[#0000FF]Several of us on the board have had a long term and mutually beneficial relationship with DWR. And in the past we have been contacted for permission to either repost one of our reports or at least to make reference to it. I, and others, have usually had no problems with allowing them to do so. And DWR does make reference to BFT in some of their videos on different subjects they have produced.

[#0000FF]Short of endorsing BFT or providing free ads on their website they do a pretty good job of directing folks to us when they have report-related questions.[/#0000FF]

Hey Burley, Like TubeDude said, the DWR is our friend, not the enemy. Most of what they do, they do for we the anglers. They're not perfect but I think they do a very good job trying to satisfy a very diverse group of fishermen with the resources they have.

They are always more than willing to share information and tips if you just ask.

Another thing to keep in mind, they know fish but not necessarily how to catch them.[Wink]

Well then again we're talking fishing stories, how much can you believe them anyway??? Just kidding there, I think the posts are usually pretty accurate, especially when you have photo evidence next to a scale... I think the division wants to help as many people enjoy a resource as they can and I appreciate that, as long as it's not hot spotting my favorite hole... Anyway have a good one... J

You know, I clicked this post with the intention of saying this is exactly the reason I don't post reports anymore. I've always tried to be helpful when I do reply but haven't been doing actual reports. Maybe TD and SkunkedAgain are right though....I'm probably not going to say "park at the spot by mile post 29, hike down 30 feet and turn left and you'll be casting at the structure where 80% of the fish are" but I think I'll start posting some reports again. I actually catch fish now, as opposed to the days when I joined this forum.

I think we all go through cycles on our posting, I've posted a couple that caused too much pressure in sensitive areas and that caused me to back away, but when I'm in a big area that can handle the pressure or can do it in a generic way that helps, I don't mind helping others out, I've really appreciated those that helped me become a better fisherman. A lot of times little comments may make the difference that helps someone have a great time, verses hating it and going back to video games... and I guess I think it's important that more people get to experience the great times that comes with fishing... Think more folks need the head clearing effects of a day on the lake or stream... But then again not too close to me if you're the uncourteous types...Later J

[#0000FF]As always, it is up to the individual poster as to how much or how little they actually reveal in their reports. My rule of thumb is that if the report is on a major water with sustainable traffic and harvest...like Utah Lake or Willard...it should be no problem to divulge more specifics. After all, conditions change almost daily anyway. But providing good worthwhile info for the future is a big part of the value of BFT over the years.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]It is not necessary to put an X on the water wherever you caught a fish, but it is helpful to point people at least to the portion of the lake in which the fish were most abundant or most active...and to give tips on types and colors of best lures.[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]
[/#0000FF]
[#0000FF]Even the "neener - neener" posts (Ha. I caught a lot of fish and I ain't sayin' nuttin') serve as vicarious fixes and fish porn for folks that are tied down to a desk...or who can't get a kitchen pass. It's all good.

Just to jump in, DWR are the ones that pointed me to BFT web site for the best information on fishing Utah waters. I have now sent my friends to BFT .

I have seen both types of reports and appreciate those who provide some details that might help me catch a few. I am trying to learn about new species and how to catch them so the details are helpful. Someone on here not long ago said that they had worked for years to learn how to catch their favorite species and everyone else should do the same. I think BFT exists so we can help each other out. After all, as I told another BFTer while he was showing me how to catch kokes, we shouldn't have to start out by whittling our own boats.

This post was not intended to be a bash of the DWR, but a complaint about how the reporter writes his report using copy&paste. It's ok to give facts. My main concern was if Moderators knew about it and now I know that you do. BTW I like the DWR.

[#0000FF]I don't think anybody took your comments to be a DWR bash. If nothing else it shows how much they rely on us to help them help the angling public to better enjoy the resources.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]I have fished around the country and my opinion is that we have a healthy and mutually respectful relationship going here with our fisheries management people. I am surprised at how hostile and adversarial it is between the agencies and the angling public in some states. Almost like it is an "us against them" kinda thing. Not good for anyone.[/#0000FF]

[#0000FF]Personally, I consider it an honor whenever someone likes what I post well enough to "copy and paste" it in a communication with others. As long as it is not followed by LOL or some derogatory remark. And I don't even get twitterpated if I am not given credit. As long as it helps someone else down the line it's fine with me.

I've had some parts of my posts show up on the DWR fishing reports in the past as well. I also thought it was a compliment.

Back in the mid-90' s while I was living in Logan I had taken my float tube over to Newton with my fly rod hoping to get into some panfish in the brush. I was flinging wooly buggers into the pockets of the brush and had a big fish take the fly. After a bit I got a glimpse of the perpetrator seeing a hefty channel cat. First and only cat I have ever caught on my fly rod. Later on in town I was in AL's sporting goods and mentioned to one of the workers I had caught a very nice channel cat out at Newton on a wooly bugger. Later that week the Herald Journal came out and the fishing report said that fishing was good for channel cats at Newton using wooly bugger flies. You just never know...

Burley, I look at it as a compliment as well on your post. There are sometimes 10x the number of non-registered users on the site at one time compared to registered ones. What we post is viewed by many a fisherman looking to increase their odds for success.
