Middle Provo 07/11/2021
#1
Fished the middle below River Road yesterday from 10:30a – 1:30p. Water was clear, good level (220 CFS), and a chilled 52* F. Steady action nymphing right off the bat. Made it an hour and a half without losing a fly so took that as a sign and re-rigged. After a quick bite for lunch I started swinging soft hackles as emerging PMDs joined the abundant caddisflies (hatching and egg-laying) and had a blast. Lots of action right up until I called it quits.

No drakes (assume they are done), but tons of caddis, PMDs hatching sporadically after lunch, lots of Procloeons (yellowish/olive body) duns, and a few Blue Quills too (duns & spinners).

Numbers-wise it was a banner day, as expected. Only bummer was the size of the fish. Seemed like everything (even the ones that came unbuttoned) were in this 9-11 inch range.

Seems reports this year on the Provo have all been smaller size?

Nice report. Yeah, middle/lower Provo has been stunted over the last several years. The days of quality browns there appears to be over. I remember on the middle/lower Provo catching numerous browns over 16" a trip, with some occasional 20"+. Those were the days in the 80's-90's. Still fun though!
