HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA—Biologists recently announced that male fish with eggs in their testes have been found in the South Branch of the Potomac River.
Scientists found the condition in 42 percent of male smallmouth bass they studied in the Potomac's South Branch last year. The findings raise concerns that the fish are being exposed to synthetic chemicals or other pollutants that mimic estrogen.
So far, a cause has not been identified. Additional studies are planned.
