Chesapeake Bay Recovery Slower Than Expected
#1
[font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"][#000000][size 2]WASHINGTON, D.C.—A new U.S. Geological Survey report about groundwater and the health of the Chesapeake Bay suggests that the Bay will take longer to recover from the effects of run-off and other pollution than expected. The reports says the ecosystem still has too much nitrogen and other nutrients, which stimulates algae blooms that hurt water quality and block sunlight from reaching underwater grasses. [font "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"][#000000][size 2]The water-quality criteria proposed by the Chesapeake Bay Program, a multi-agency conservation organization, most likely won't be met by the goal date of 2010 because of the lag time between implementing best management practices and the actual improvement in quality of the groundwater entering the Bay.
