TO: MR. GERSON P. KAVAMOTO
FROM: JAPAN
DATE OF ITINERARY : August 12-19, 2001 [Image: gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=3498;]

Hucho Taimen
Range: [#000000]Mongolia and Siberia (North-Central Asia)[/#000000]
Habitat: [#000000]Large, cool flowing rivers with many deep pools[/#000000]
Diet: [#000000]Primarily Rodents (Rabbits, Lemmings, Prairie Dogs, Rats) plus fish[/#000000]
Size: [#000000]Commonly caught over 50lbs (22kgs) attaining a length of up to 50 inches (1.3m)
[/#000000]Weight: [#000000]Upto a massive 231lbs (105kgs)
[/#000000]Length: [#000000]7+ feet (2.1m)[/#000000]

One of the largest, if not [#000000]the largest of the Salmonoid Family, the Taimen resembles an elongated rainbow trout on steroids[/#000000]!

Primarily an ambush predator,[#000000] the Taimen lies in wait at the bottom of a pool which can be found at the end of rapids. Here it intercepts any hapless mammals or birds which has been washed into the stream.[/#000000][#000000] [/#000000]

The Taimen [#000000]is a very long lived species. Like the flathead Catfish or Sturgeon, sizes of captured fish will decrease with time as fishing pressure increases if catch and release is not exercised.
[/#000000]
Tactics [#000000](if you are ever lucky enough to end up in Central Asia) include using various decapitated rodents on very large hooks (13/0).You will then drift your bait through a likely looking pool or you can employ a lure that mimics a drowning rodent.[/#000000]

How to catch a Taimen ?-[#000000]Our recommendations are attained from experience and also taken on advice from Taimen fisherman from the Far East. As a general rule, Taimen live in rivers with clean cool waters with an abundance of deep holes. The Taimen is a mighty advisary , with a basic diet of fish, small mammals, birds and insects.[/#000000]

Where to fish ?-[#000000]On large rivers, you will find the mighty Taimen lurking at the bottom of the deepest holes. Here also, you will also find the more numerous smaller fish upto 25lbs (20kgs)[/#000000][#000000].[/#000000]

What fishing tackle to use ?-Basically, Taimen are caught on a multitude of varying baits. As a rule, large artificial lures in yellow and red work best. During the night, when the Taimen lowers its guard, artificial surface lures mimicking a rodent or small bird prove deadly. The most productive baits are of the spinner type with a rotating blade. Best lengths appear to be anything from 13 up to 24 centimeters in a wide range of colours. One of the most deadliest of all artificials is the twister which seams to attract the attention of most. On a last note it is always wise to remember the old adage that a large Taimen prefers a large bait
