Snap or no snap
#1
Is it better to use a snap to connect line to lure or should you tie directly to the lure? I have heard that snaps give the lure more action, any opinions?

kybasser
"The two best times to fish is when it's rainin' and when it ain't." ~Patrick F. McManus

I like to use a barrol swivel then tie on a leader line then my lure.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. Clown

Using a snap depends on the kind of lure you are using. I tie all my crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwater lure directly to the line. When trout fishing with spoons I will use a snap, when using spinners I will not use a snap. Some people lilke using a snap with Panter Martins or Roostertails. It all comes down to what works best for you.

Snaps are okay for inlines and crankbaits, in other words anything with an eye to atttach to. Spinners and Buzz would be direct tie in my book. Although I usually tie direct with a palamar with a double wrap I have been known to use snaps when changeing lures quite often out of frustration. Actually what it all comes down to is what you prefer and have faith in when fishing.

I will use snaps when I am searching. This allows me to change cranks and jerkbaits and even topwaters quickly(allowing me to change color or depth). On some topwaters like Splash it or certain poppers it can hinder the burble. On lures such as Zaras or Sammys where a "walk the dog" action is desired I will tie directly to the lure.

You may want to consider pre tying a short leader line to your lures (about 3 inches will do nicely) this will give you full action of your lure with the quick change verticality for those hard fast fishing tournaments.

Use a polymer knot on your lures and retie new leaders to the lures you plan to use on your tournament for complete confidence in your rigging.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. I put snaps on lures which don't have a smooth loop to attach line, such as most spoons, in order to avoid getting my line cut by attaching directly to such lures. I, however, leave the snap on the lure, and tie a new knot each time I change lures or after fighting a heavy fish to better ensure the line doesn't break because of a strained knot. I rarely use a swivel. Some lures, such as a Super Duper, rely on line twist to produce their intended action. The Super Duper spins in one direction (and moves sideways in that direction) until the line is sufficiently twisted to cause the lure to start spinning in the opposite direction (and then moves sideways in the other direction). Using a swivel on such lures would eliminate line twist which is required for their designed action.

I think Rapala recommends that using a "Loop Knot" allows the plug to swim better. The hot anglers that use the latest swim baits all tie a loop directly to the eyelet of the lead head and swear it helps the action. Many of the bill fishermen are using the "Loop Knot" as their main knot on the live mackerel hooks. Truthfully, I can't see the difference in a Loop from the Trilene or Palomar except it's lots easier to tie with heavy line.

George Van Zant
http://www.bigfishtackle.com/georgescorner.htm
