The cod fishing on Stellwagen started out slow through most of the early part of the week only to open-up with non-stop action by the week’s end. Deep-water bait-fishing had brought the only productive action, however on Saturday the cod finally moved into the shoal-water resulting spectacular spring cod fishing that is as good as it gets.

The split-charter including Bill Hines of Ossinig, NY and John Colson and friends worked hard on the eastern edge of the bank in the 190-230 ft depths on Thursday’s trip on B-Fast’s JANET B. Scrod and market-cod to 15 pounds as well as 8 keeper haddock made up the catch. Long-time clients Bruce Harbac of N. Newark, NJ fishing on the DECISIVE and Peter Goetz and friends from New Hyde Park, NY on the JANET B had slightly better fishing from the same depths on Friday. The bite was good during the last part of the outgoing tide in the morning followed by a steady pick on the flood. New fish seemed to be moving in from the east. Further, many of the cod had small whiting and herring in their stomachs indicative that bait-fish were moving in also.

On a whim, predicated on more bait-fish showing on the color fish-finders the day before and the whiting showing in the cod stomach contents, Capt. Scott on B-Fast’s DECISIVE decided to try the shoal-water’s 80-120 ft depths. His intuition proved to be correct. The cod were stacked-up chasing the schools of juvenile whiting and small herring. Pat Lynch’s group from Galoway, NJ on the JANET B and the owner of FISHERMAN’S DEPOT, Victor and friends from College Point, NY on the DECISIVE found the action fast and furious. So much so that both the mates and captains were busy taking doubles of cod between 7 and 15 pounds off the rigs and boxing the catch—too fast and furious. The anglers started out using bait but soon found that sending the rigs back down with just the teasers on was equally effective. Limits of cod were very quickly filled. Pat Lynch exclaimed that this was the fastest action he ever experienced during what has been the best action on the bank of this late-starting spring cod season.
