Fishing derby, Cinco de Mayo, fund-raiser this weekend

PALMDALE -- Fishing for youngsters, firefighting demonstrations, a Cinco de Mayo parade and a fund-raising walk for March of Dimes are activities scheduled today in the Antelope Valley.

In Lancaster, families can learn about the work of firefighters as the Los Angeles County Fire Department hosts Antelope Valley's seventh annual Fire Service Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at North County Training Center and Fire Station 129, at 42110 6th St. W., north of Avenue M.

Visitors can see fire engines, watch firefighting demonstrations, try on fire department clothing, operate a fire hose and meet Sparky the Fire Dog. There will also be games, food and a display of helicopter water drops, along with the opportunity to watch how victims trapped in wrecked vehicles are rescued with the Jaws of Life rescue tool.

[/url]The 20th annual Youth Fishing Derby, sponsored by Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, opens at 7 a.m. today at Apollo County Park, 4555 W. Ave. G.

Park gates open at 6 a.m. The derby, for anglers ages 5 to 15, runs through 10 a.m.

No fee or fishing license is required. Only one pole is permitted per youth, and there is a five-fish limit. Participants must bring their own fishing equipment and bait. More than 2,000 youths participated last year.

Prizes will be awarded for heaviest trout caught by a boy and girl in each of four age groups.

The park will be open to the public for fishing at the conclusion of the youth derby. For more information, call Recreation headquarters in Newhall at (661) 259-1750.

Also in Lancaster, people can raise money for the March of Dimes with a walk that begins at 8 a.m. in Lancaster City Park, 43011 10th St. W. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.

There are two routes: a shorter route, which runs west on Avenue K-8, right on 25th Street West to Avenue J-8 and right onto 10th Street West and back to the park, and a longer route, which continues up 25th Street West to Lancaster Boulevard, where it turns right on Fern Avenue, right on Newgrove Avenue, left on 10th Street West and back to the park.

In Lake Los Angeles, the community's Cinco de Mayo parade and festival will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today. The parade, which commemorates an 1862 victory by a Mexican army over a French army, begins at noon at 170th Street East and Lake Los Angeles Avenue and proceeds north to Avenue O.

Participants will include youth groups, equestrian exhibitions, school bands and car clubs. After the parade, there will be folklore dancers and live entertainment in the festival at 170th Street East and Avenue O.

Also today, tickets to the 2004 Antelope Valley Fair's Robertson Palmdale Honda Concert Series go on sale at the new fairgrounds box office on Avenue H west of the Antelope Valley Freeway.

The box office will open at 8 a.m. Tickets for arena events also go on sale today.

For the first time, concert grandstand seating will be included with fair admission, but fairgoers can also pay $25 or $50 for closer trackside or "gold circle" seats.

Classic rock bands REO Speedwagon and Styx will co-headline the opening night Aug. 27 concert. Country vocalist Jo Dee Messina, along with singer Phil Vassar, will perform Aug. 28.

Banda Machos and Mexican vocalist Ana Barbara will perform Aug. 29, which will be one of two Pay One Price Days at the fair. Admission will cost $12 that day but will include carnival rides as well as the concert.

Country singers Brad Paisley and Joe Nichols will perform Aug. 30.

The Newsboys and Audio Adrenaline, both contemporary Christian groups, will perform Aug. 31.

Pop-rock band Smash Mouth and Los Angeles club band Maroon 5 will perform Sept. 1.

All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Arena events will include the Figure 8 race Sept. 3, Rural Olympics Sept. 4, bull riding Sept. 5 and demolition derby Sept. 6. Figure 8 seating will be included with a $12 admission fee Sept. 3 on the second of the Pay One Price Days. Rural Olympics seats will be included with the regular admission price.

Bull riding and demolition derby seats are $15, including fair admission.

Phone orders for all tickets may be placed by calling (661) 948-6060, Ext. 230. Phone orders will be filled starting at 10 a.m. today, after the walk-up ticket window lines have been handled.

On the first day of ticket sales, there will be a limit of 10 trackside or gold circle tickets per person. Checks with photo identification, cash, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express will be accepted.

Tickets may also be purchased through TicketMaster beginning at 10 a.m.

Fair admission prices will rise $1 from last year. Prices will be $7 for general admission and $4 for children ages 6 to 11 and seniors age 55 and older. Children under age 6 and active-duty military personnel with identification will be admitted free.

Advance admission tickets will be $4 and will be on sale through Aug. 26 at the fairgrounds, 2551 W. Ave. H.
